LM13 mint-flashplugin-11 at version 11.0, not 11.2
The latest release of Adobe Flash Player, 11.2, is the last major release for Linux (outside of Google Chrome), although it'll receive security updates for the next five years (http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/ ... 40104.html) - rather convenient for this LTS release of Linux Mint. However, I just noticed that mint-flashplugin-11 is at the obsolete version 11.0. Ubuntu has adobe-flashplugin at the latest version, and they should release security updates as they arrive from Adobe. Unfortunately, if I try to remove mint-flashplugin-11, Synaptic and Software Manager both want to additionally remove mint-meta-codecs. Would it be possible for Linux Mint to regularly update mint-flashplugin-11, or to make it independently removable so as to simply replace it with adobe-flashplugin (ultimately the easiest solution, considering support would simply come from Ubuntu)?

Yes, we need option to manage flash plugin without uninstalling all mint codecs :/
Re: LM13 mint-flashplugin-11 at version 11.0, not 11.2
mint-meta-codecs is just a metapackage (as the name says) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MetaPackages
Re: LM13 mint-flashplugin-11 at version 11.0, not 11.2
Yea, but removing it removes all mint codecs toozerozero wrote:mint-meta-codecs is just a metapackage (as the name says) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MetaPackages

gutigen,
try this (don't worry because the -s switch won't do anything, only perform a simulation)
post the output here
try this (don't worry because the -s switch won't do anything, only perform a simulation)
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove -s mint-meta-codecs
Re: LM13 mint-flashplugin-11 at version 11.0, not 11.2
If you are using Firefox try downloading the flash-aid add on this gives you a choice of installing the adobe beta version or the stable ubuntu version from the repros. It uninstalls flash and then reinstalls the version you choose with little input from you. installed this add on to my wifes laptop has she gets all moody if the latest version of flash is not installed lol . When activated (after you've chosen which version you want to install) a terminal window opens and apart from typing "y" to confirm thats all the input thats required. at the moment she is running Firefox 12.0 and flash version 11.2.202.235 Hope this helps.
Re: LM13 mint-flashplugin-11 at version 11.0, not 11.2
No it doesn't remove the codecs. A meta package is nothing more than a package that installs other packages. You can uninstall the meta package itself, and the other stuff is left in place.gutigen wrote:Yea, but removing it removes all mint codecs toozerozero wrote:mint-meta-codecs is just a metapackage (as the name says) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MetaPackages
Re: LM13 mint-flashplugin-11 at version 11.0, not 11.2
The problem here is that when you install the adobe-flashplugin mint-meta-codecs is listed as to be removed so all the other packages the install with it are removed also.
Impact on packages: adobe-flash-properties-gtk (installed), mint-flashplugin (removed), mint-meta-codecs (removed), adobe-flashplugin (installed)

grimsbain, that output you quoted is from aptitude?

grimsbain,
i don't see any problem in that output:
you removed mint-flashplugin but installed in its place adobe-flashplugin (so it's all good)
now the "big issue" here in this topic mint-meta-codecs is a meta-package https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MetaPackages it's an empty package, useful to install others but once they are installed it's not needed anymore and can be safely removed.
as viking777 once said imagine it as a shopping-list, once you do the shopping, you can throw the list away

Well stated. I was trying to explain this myself, but apparently failed.zerozero wrote:grimsbain,

Removing the package mint-flashplugin does not seem to actually remove the file
/opt/mint-flashplugin-11/libflashplayer.so
is still installed, although the newer adobe-flashplugin takes precedence in Firefox
Edit: just found solution, Mark for complete removal in Synaptic removes the file

Also noriced a serious improvement in deleting mint-flashplugin to replace it with adobe-flashplugin .Couldn't use E$P_3 because the perf were very slow. The switch helped.
