trying to run Shredder

Postby DeepBlunder on Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:01 pm

I have downloaded a chess program named Shredder12 Linux and am having trouble getting it to run. The instructions are as follows:

To unpack Shredder enter
tar xzf shredder12.tar.gz
in the command line or double click on the downloaded archive in your
favourite windows manager. To start Shredder use the Shredder12 script. If you have not installed the right Java version Shredder will
automatically install Sun Java for you.

So when I cut/paste "tar xzf shredder12.tar.gz" into the command line of the terminal this is the response I got:

tar (child): shredder12.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Aside from that error, with regards to the instructions "To start Shredder use the Shredder12 script" I don't even know what the means.

I have no doubt I am missing something completely straightforward. As this is my first experience in a Linux operating system I am honestly more than a bit lost and would appreciate any advice or direction. I do love xfce. It has been stable, slick, and overall a real pleasure since I installed it several months ago.

Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

sounds like you need to cd to the place where you down loaded it.im assuming its in the Downloads folder so in terminal type cd Downloads if that isnt where it is cd to that place. Might also want to run ls (small L) after cding to to be sure your in the correct spot.
