Mint 13 - Cinnamon - Flash-drive freezes

Postby Ilya3L on Thu Jun 14, 2012 3:02 am

Hello!

While copying 11GB of files on my desktop FROM external HDD it was okay, but when I connected my 16GB usb-flash drive and started copying files TO flash-drive, it began to suddenly freeze and unfreeze. First 30% of so seemed to be okay, than it froze, after a few minutes the process continued. Then it came worse. At the point of last freeze on 98-99% I had to wait around 7 minutes before it continued. I couldn't also use any tools on my desktop or within opera broser. Cursor was moving but with no effect on clicks.

Had someone similar problems? Is there a way to fix it?

Hard disks are can read and write files many times faster than a flash drive can. So, copying from the flash drive (slow) to the hard disk (fast) doesn't cause any problems as files are being read slower than they can be written. Copying from the hard disk to the flash drive can be a problem, as files are being read faster than they can be written. If other programs also want to read or write files, everything slows down as each program accessing the hard disk causes a delay for the other. If you are copying that much gigabytes worth of data, I'd say take a short break and let the computer do its thing

Got it. Hope they will fix it one day. Whatabout me I'll try to take a look on the same process on the different distros. Probably someone has a solution
