All the debian repos are commented out in my srouces.list and I been cleaning up what I had to do to get the system working, now running the 3.0.1 kernel from lmde repos, so I believe I'm back on rolling distro.... I'm not big on reinstalls either, I've used alot of different OS's, starting with the original DOS and UNIX, and finally it's the time for me to move completely to Linux kernel Distro. This is my new system after 6years, only 2 installs on that computer 1 when I build it and 2 when W7 came out. I was just waiting to move away from MS until I put together a new system, anywat this topic os about repos and now I know better...thanks for your input!

And i suggest to delete the squeeze sources, because you can't downgrade from testing to squeeze.

I agree with Gerd50, get rid of that word "backport" I'm surpised that you didn't get an error message on that

As far as the squeeze repos, I'd just change the words to 'testing' instead of 'squeeze' and when/if you need to use those repos sometime in the future, they will point to testing instead of some long-gone "Official" release.

It would not hurt anything to keep backports enabled (or romeo).
It would not help either, as I have never seen anything in them.

Why? You only need the LMDE repo and testing . Mixing Debian releases is a good way to mess things up.

The 'why' i explained in the article:

In order to run LMDE with Debian stable sources install 201012 Gnome 64-bit or 201101 Gnome 32-bit and change the
sources.list after installation.

For the unstable (sid) repos i hope it's self describing for those who want to run LMDE with the sid sources.

For a Mint standard LMDE setup your sources should look like this:

I already have those repos, but I think it is for the very stable packages, not frequent updates. I think I need updates a bit more frequent and stable.
Anyway, any other repos recommended?

These repos will get you tracking Debian's testing repos directly, bypassing Mint's UP system.

I have 2 questions:
Please note I mean no offense to anybody, just in case!
1- After adding the new repo and disabeling the old one, it says it will make changes that include removing mate, how come? what would the desktop left be.?
2- If these are updates, why weren't they updated in the original repo? i.e.: why bother the user to do changes to sources.list or whatever to get updates?

I reverted and didn't update till I understand the answer to the first question.

Changing the deb-multimedia repo and adding the new key shouldn't have anything to do with Mate, unless you accidentally changed other repos in your sources.list.

But now I'm more convinced that we are having a problem in the repos issue.
Allow me to think aloud with you.

1- I believe that LMDE has changed it's mind and is not a real rolling distro anymore, Which was one point of strength and people liked it.
2- I don't think changing repos manually is a good idea. I always tend to think as a complete noob who comes from the windoze world (where everything is enforced on the user), and hesitant to try linux. In this regards, I believe something should be done in synaptic, like leting the user do checkboxes to chose how he wants his updates, in simple english and synaptic does the rest and choses the convenient repos, eg:
- I want the most stable and secure distro.
- I want bleeding edge distro but just working. / Or - I can take some risk of a crash from time to time.
- I want the latest being tested even not usable!
3- In regards to changing repos, I have experienced "Yum" (as far as I can remember) in OpenSuse which had an option to downgrade to several versions earlier.
I wonder If we can have such thing.

Again, all what I'm talking about is out of caring about my favourite distro and that I want it to be always no. 1 and the most leading. And I believe it can be done.

Hmm, i don't have problems with the repos. I'm not a fan of the mint way with incoming and latest and never used
this way. I like my Sid and Testing systems, with regularly backups they are easy to handle. Testing and mint latest
are semi rolling i would say, sid is the real rolling system
