Thanks for your quick reply zerozero.
Unfortunately, I'm not a advance user, and I just don't know what i can do with this kind of information:

Package: *
Pin: origin mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca
Pin-Priority: 700

or

http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/linuxmint-packages/

And I can't find synaptic under Xfce.

When you say server has been down. That's permanent or is just down for maintenance?

the server is temporarily down, the thing is some of us are to impatient and look for a fix in the next minute  should be up soon.

about the other question (and because synaptic is a beautiful peace of software that everybody should use) i believe that you can find it under menu > system.
anyway you can always call it through the terminal with

Code: Select all

gksu synaptic

thanks again zerozero for your reply :D
Since my last post i did a lot of search. Can you tell me if I'm right or not for future reference please?

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
#deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca/linuxmint-packages/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/apt/preferences
Package: *
Pin: release o=linuxmint
Pin-Priority: 700

#Package: *
#Pin: origin packages.linuxmint.com
#Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: origin mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: release o=Debian
Pin-Priority: 500
and finely

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

But I will restore LMDE default setting when the server will be back.

it's almost everything spot-on :D but you need

Code: Select all

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
enabled (that is, without the #) the only one affected is packages.linuxmint

as for the rest, super 8)

I also have this problem, I get timeouts from packages.linuxmint.com.

But what me really worries is the server packages.linuxmint.com points to:
server.gutterclutterbuster.com

Is this the correct server?
The combination of gutterclutterbusters and linux is ... odd.
Add to it that some days ago Ubuntu posted a security advisory about a possible
man in the middle attack (http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-1477-1/).

Therefore I would like to ask if someone from the server team could verify that
server.gutterclutterbuster.com is indeed the correct server for the package
repository and that no one has fooled around with the DNS to smuggle compromised
packages on our systems.

Could anyone do that please?

cheers (hope so)
Michi

a simple search would show you that is simple a mirror for linuxmint
http://server.gutterclutterbuster.com/
and a pretty old one (with entries from 2009)
http://server.gutterclutterbuster.com/pool/

When you say the server is ok and you have seen it before in the list,
that's then fine with me.

Just checking if the server actually contains the directory structure of the
package repository was not enough to convince me.
Because, if the server was really set up to contain compromised packages,
it would of course try to mimic a regular repository layout.
And falsifying the modification dates should also not be too difficult
if you really want to set up a trojan horse.

Thanks for checking!
