Recent problems with Mint13 Cinnamon

Postby MintNoobUser on Tue Jun 19, 2012 1:36 am

Hi everybody!

I am a non-technical user of Linux Mint. I'm a linguist/translator and not a computer science guy. But.. I love Linux. Let's get that out there straight away.

For my first few years of Linux I was a Fedora user until some driver problems drove me away. I tried Ubuntu, bleh and ended up here at Mint! and how I've been enjoying it. Very stable, little fuss, and I get my study and work done without the OS getting in the way (99% of the time).

Recently, I've had a problem within Mint Cinnamon 13 randomly logging out. Is this a known problem? Anybody know the possible cause? If not, can somebody give me some steps which will help sort the problem out. (command examples because I don't do that stuff.) I don't know how to file bugs and frankly don't really want to learn. (I've got a list of things to do which is in terms of years...)

It's annoying to lose work because of this - I to a lot of delicate work which I really don't like doing twice. :)

Hopefully I can get it fixed... or perhaps there is a new distro which I'm going to be looking for soon. Thanks in advance for any help.

Can't speak to your problem directly; I'm not aware of it being a known problem and I've not experienced it. However, you're using LM 12 which was not, in my experience, the most stable release. This wasn't LM's fault - it was the first release with the Gnome 3 desktop from Ubuntu and various workarounds which was probably as good as it could be but not perfect. LM 13 is out and much better. I'd recommend upgrading to it and see how that goes - I'd expect it could well resolve your issue. You can get 13 with either the MATE (ie Gnome 2) or Cinnamon desktops. If you're unsure, MATE will work best on older kit but if your PC is reasonably modern cinnamon is prettier (IMHO!).

Thanks for the reply, robw. One tiny problem, I am using Mint 13. So far, I've only noticed that it's slow and unstable. I was using Cinnamon with 12 and it was much better in these ways, even though it's now come along in features. (Early days still.)

K7plus1, I've taken a look at the thread and it doesn't solve my problem. I didn't have any auto-suspend on. I'm using a desktop and it was switched off.

Thanks anyway for the attempts. Looks like another thing which will have me moving distro... where the hell do I go now? *gulp*

did you try out the thing said in the last post in the thread. that seems to be a solution.

and i don't think you find a more user friendly linux distribution than mint. i tried the other distributions and being a newbie myself couldn't live with any other distro than mint. so trust me, if mint has problems the others would have loads of them

That doesn't seem to be the problem with my system either.

I think that you're confusing user friendliness with plain old bugs. This is a case of the later... it seems that many are getting crashes and freezing problems.

Plenty
Solus OS (gnome)
Debian Stable (any DE) , saline (xfce), kanotix (kde), crunchbang (openbox)

Another small distros I used for more than 1.5 year, upgrade countless times , always works.

Maybe cinnamon does not work well because of graphics driver problems in 13. Please run inxi -Gx in terminal and post the output here.

If I were you, I would log into Gnome Classic instead of Cinnamon. You can do this at the login screen. If the problem doesn't persist, perhaps we can further troubleshoot the issue
