Sound hiccups/glitches/crackles Linux Mint 13 MATE 64bit

Post by Milkman Mr. Miller »

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any solution to this. And I've been looking real deep into this...

Whenever I play audio from any player (Banshee, Rhythmbox, VLC) I can't do anything like browsing the web, playing a little game or working on documents without hearing this crackling sounds. To define the sound a little bit better... It seems that it slows a bit down but wants to keep up with the normal speed.

This about describes the audio setup of my computer.

Code: Select all

Audio: Card-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Redwood HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5000 Series] driver: snd_hda_intel
           Card-2: C-Media CM8738 driver: snd_cmipci
Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture ver: 1.0.24

EDIT June 12th: in a Launchpad reported bug (#345627) one sentence desribes pretty good what I think is the cause: These anomalies are due to buffering and clock adjustment calculations that incorrectly assume that the underlying hardware is well-behaved (source: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/345627). This Launchpad bug should be solved by Ubuntu Jaunty Jeopard. But it is has gotten worse since I switched from Linux Mint 12 32bit to Linux Mint 13 64bit. Although some other, larger, issues solved by switching to the new Linux Mint/MATE, I'm not going back.

Is this a buffering problem? If yes, how can I increase this "buffer"?
Is my system perhaps not "suited" for a 64 bit version of Linux?

I've switched to a Cinnamon version of Linux Mint 13 now, and the glitches seem to be history so far.

BUT, How come Rhythmbox and/or Banshee sometime stop playing songs(ogg file format or mp3) for a while and then, minutes later, continue playing? I had this with MATE aswell.
EDIT: this Banshee/Rhythmbox problem has already been reported as bug #988529 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/988529 )

I am having this issue as well, however - this seems to be solving the issue for most: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu ... _crackling

My issue seems to be a bit different, but if you haven't already give that fix a try.

hi.

I tried this recipe http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=102943

cracks became less, but still repeated=(

My hardvare is:

Code: Select all

lspci -v
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 06)
	Subsystem: Giga-byte Technology Device a002
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 43
	Memory at fbff4000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
	Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [70] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
	Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel
	Capabilities: [130] Root Complex Link
	Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
	Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
Software:
Linux Mint 13 64bit

Code: Select all

$ pulseaudio --version
pulseaudio 1.1
Sound hiccups/glitches/crackles in audio, video, flash audio and flash video

I had a similar problem. I did something that maybe is wrong; From the Software Center, I uninstalled PulseAudio. Then, I rebooted and it uses the Alsa mixer. These sound problems seems that have gone. But I want to use again pulse audio, in order to use the solution mentioned here; https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu ... _crackling

I reinstalled Pulse Audio from software center, but it seems that continues to use Alsa instead of pulse audio. How can I restore pulse audio and all the changes I did to the default sound configuration (as it was before the uninstallation of pulse audio) ?

Why did you decide that pulseaudio is not used?

Because when I uninstalled pulseaudio the volume adjust icon near the clock at the right part of the taskbar dissapeared and after the re-installation it has not apeared. I added a volume icon by right-clicking and adding items to taskbar. It is not the same as the initial icon's menu when I click to it (it has a button "check sound level"). When I click to that button, a window appears with volume adjustments of alsamixer

What about the audio stuttering after re-installation? Did the problem came back?

Hi, I just migrated over to Linux and I'm having the same problem. I get crackle and hiccups whenever playing emulators or minecraft. I saw in another forum that disabling pulse might fix this so I uninstalled it. Lo snd behold problem gone. But when I rebooted suddenly all sound was gone. So I reinstalled pulse and the problem persists. If anyone finds a solution please baby step it for me.

I already tried the fix for crackle and chop here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu ... _crackling It didnt work

Hi,

Having used Linux Mint 12 x64 with Cinnamon desktop since it came out I did a total reformat and installed Maya x64 Cinnamon. Very nice but whenever I play music using Banshee or Rhythmbox every now and again it does short, fast repeats. I guess you'd call them hiccups. Like the same word or not repeated rapidly 3 or 4 times. It's driving me nuts. Has this been identified as an issue and is there a fix? I'm on an i7, 8 virtual cores and 12GB RAM so I'm not short of grunt.

Cheers

Does anyone know if this is solved in PulseAudio 1.2? It appears that precise uses 1.1.1. Thanks!

I appear to have fixed it by killing the PulseAudio process when the video runs too fast or slow or if the sound skips. At least I've not had a repeat so far.

Hope this helps.

What it stopped for me was the immediate over speeding of video. While video is a bit better, the sound skipping in various music players has returned. Don't know what's triggering it off, don't see any unusual activity in system monitor.

I have solved sound problem.
I restored the default settings in files: /etc/pulse/default.pa, /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.
And added one line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=generic
Sound problems stopped.

UPD 4.09.12 my solution, but in russian http://kooo-debian.blogspot.com/2012/09 ... nt-13.html

I'm having the EXACT same problem in Linux Mint 13, 32-bit.

For me, the problem just started happening 2 days ago. Before that, everything was fine. Now, ANY kind of sound (in-game audio, playing an MP3, watching a Youtube video, playing a video from my hard drive) I get the "stuttering" you describe -- saying the same thing 3 or 4 times which really messes with your nerves.

I still find the sound output on my Linux Mint Mate 13 machine terrible as opposed to the same hardware Linux Mint Cinnamon 13 machine.

What gives, it sure seems like it's some sort of glitch with mate?

Would have expected a solution to be posted by now. :(
