Why would you install mint if you want the unity desktop? Installing ubuntu 12.04 would be simpler.

Don't agree with that Remoulder, I have Mint Main with Unity on it for many reasons. Mainly because I think it is better than any of the default desktops, yet Mint has a better community than Ubuntu, but let's not get into that, it is not my intention to start a flame war, it is simply my personal choice.

As to the OP's question, you just open the package manager, locate unity, and mark it for installation. Next time you boot you choose it in the session menu in mdm and make it the default session.

You can then (if you want) go back into the package manager and mark Cinnamon (or other desktops you don't want) for removal.

It couldn't be easier than that, especially if you already have Mint installed and not Ubuntu.

@viking777, I simply meant ub12.04 comes with unity pre-installed, optimized and integrated with other applications. Adding it to a mint release doesn't seem to offer many advantages, forums not withstanding, and seems unlikely to give the same out of the box experience you would get from a native ub install imo.

Agree with remoulder.

Mint 13 Cinnamon/Mate - all possible Unity packages expunged, optimized for Cinnamon or MATE
Ubuntu 12.04 - optimized for Unity

Or, you want a sports car: either get the sports car that has been turned into a pickup and turn it into a sports car again - or just get the sports car.

You can still use Mint's forum even though you're on Ubuntu, I've been on 12.04 as my main OS for a few months now.

I've installed Unity on my Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon but it doesn't work because it is missing in MDM.

Consider using Unity with a certain near-identical OS which is optimized for Unity.

Interesting, I thought MDM was the default in Mint these days but perhaps I was wrong. Anyway it is easily fixed. Whilst running Cinnamon:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mdm

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdm
Then reboot into Unity.

And don't listen to Bimsebasse on this topic  , Unity runs perfectly well on Maya, I had both Ubuntu 12.04 and Maya Unity installed side by side at one point and I couldn't detect any difference so I uninstalled Ubuntu as there is very little point in having two almost identical installations running at the same time.
