Hot Corner Menu

Postby novabrahm on Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:11 pm

OS: LM 12 Lisa
CPU: i7-2670QM
RAM: 8 GB
Graphics: Sandybridge Mobile

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I looked all over the forums and couldn't find an answer.

In the GNOME 3 LMGSE environment on Lisa, mousing over the hot corner allows rearrangement of windows as well as a search box for applications/settings and an area for pinned favorites. This was my primary method for launching applications.

I recently installed Cinnamon 1.4 only to discover the the hot corner functionality has been reduced. I know that these features are to some extent available in the MintMenu, but the MintMenu opens slower and is less convenient.

I really like some of the new features in Cinnamon, but the hot corner menu was one of my favorite features and I have temporarily switched back to GNOME 3 LMGSE. Is there a way to re-enable this?

the over-view was removed from cinnamon in early stage of development and as far as i can tell is not planned to be re-introduced.
you have some of the functionality within the menu (as you pointed out) but that about it.

This was my favourite feature of Cinnamon as well, I hope it will be back! It was very convenient just to mouse over the 'hot corner' and directly type some text to search for an application. I also used the "favourite app bar" that was shown on the left side inside the 'hot corner', that seems to be gone as well :(

To be honest, I never used the normal taskbar-menu when Cinnamon had these features. That's how good it was!

Hopefully someone makes a Gnome Shell Overview extension for Cinnamon, it would basically mean that - not counting the awesome extensions.org site - Gnome Shell would have nothing on Cinnamon. In Cinnamon the overview is split into two separate overviews (expo and scale) and the menu.
Thank you for this thread. That’s all I can say. You most definitely have made this forum into something special. You clearly know what you are doing, you’ve covered so many bases. Thanks!

Hey bimsebasse! This is only your view and view of other developers of cinnamon. But many users including me liked the default overview of hot corner in LMGSE. I can confirm that cinnamon is more configurable and costumizable bcuz of ability to add applets and extensions. But its idea to reduce the functionalities of hot corner is not very welcomed. Using the Expo and Scale sytles doesn't contradict with existing of Fav bar and most important the search bar. In my point of view the Expo mode is more controllable than default workspace switching in Gnome Shell, but removing the Fav bar and search bar is kinda reducing user choices. My main reason of using cinnamon over gnome shell was its double power to navigate between windows and search among applications but with removing those abilities from hot corner I feel that developers intentionally limited my choices.
Please reflect our opinions to the developers if you can.
If you know an assured solution/idea/suggestion, I'll be glad to send it to me @?

Hey there...

Yeah, I also liked the Hot Corner menu better in Linux Mint 12, and I'm very sorry, that the Hot Corner menu has been reduced in 13 & 14..

WHich puts in quite a dilemma, because that I like the Hot Corner in LMGE 12 so much, that I am contemplating installing LMGE 12 instead of 13/14... But I like the start menu in 14 and the newer kernel for better hardware support...

I think the best would be Linux Mint with Cinnamon and fav bar & search bar & app overview in Hot corner...! So that would be a plead to the developers...! PLEASE BRING BACK THE LINUX MINT 12 HOT CORNER...!! :)

"Active menu on hover" is back. You can put the menu icon on the edge of any panel (bottom or top), so it works like a hot-corner. Moreover, on the last Cinnamon build from glebihan unstable ppa, you can set four hot-corners at the same time, each hotcorner is able to activate any command.

I think users who very much like the Mint 12 overview have to look themselves long and hard in the mirror and understand that they are, in fact, gnome shell users :D

That done, it's probably time to realize that maybe a gnome shell distro is a better fit for you than a non-gnome shell distro.

That done, there are options like Ubuntu Gnome Remix or Pinguy (Mint familiarity plus gnome shell as default desktop) or fedora (an OS tailored to suit Gnome Shell as its main desktop).

Well, either that or you still have to wait until someone makes an activities overview extension for cinnamon :D

In short: Pinguy or wait! I can assure you that the devs are not in agreement and therefore not interested in rolling Scale and Expo and the Menu applet back into one unified overview.

Finally it's here!

Though I still think the top left hot corner should just know if it was Scale or Expo I wanted to see, I mean, we spend a lot of time together.
