My PC Hangs for no reason!

Post by happyguy »

I have just installed linux and got over boot loading problem but now when i am using my pc linux mint (maya) seems to hang for no reason.... it has happened for about 4 time now, it happens suddenly even when i have not open any apps. I have tried to press all keys (such as ctrl+ alt + delete, etc) the mouse is moving but nothing else is responding. This problem doesn't happen continuously when i restart linux mint then i see no error about improper shutdown(as I force shut down my pc after waiting some time) , then upon starting again its all normal then later after a couple of hours it hangs again!
I have no idea what is happening and why is it happening! :( :(

This may seem a daft question...
Are you using LightDM as the login manager or the default MDM? I ask because I was having similar issues, and I'd switched to using LightDM as soon as I installed mint. On a whim I switched back to MDM the other day and have been crash free since.

I recommend you read that thread:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=83444

You need to give us a little more info about your system and the edition of Mint you are running. Type the following command on a terminal and post it here:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fc 0
This will help us help you!

Oh there's a reason your PC is hanging up. You're using a distro based on Ubuntu 12.04. Lots and lots of lockup threads both here and on the Ubuntu forums re: 12.04.

Have you tried the NVIDIA driver instead of the nouveau driver? Also, is there a reason why you use a 32 bit edition on a 64 bit machine?

I have this same exact problem since installing LightDM, sometimes it freezes on the login screen, sometimes shortly after loading the desktop, no problems before LightDM. When it hangs, the mouse freezes and keyboard is unresponsive... Sometimes I can run for a few days straight (without rebooting or logging out) and it runs like a top! I think I'm going to switch back to MDM for the time being, until I hear more about the situation... I'm running Mint 13 MATE x64...

I know with my system it's not a fan, temp, or psu issue, I replaced the psu awhile back when the old one started giving me problems, and it ran like a total champ until installing lightdm, and since I switched back to mdm the problem went away completely. Can't speak for the original poster, but here's my numbers:
