Postby burrina on Sun Jun 17, 2012 7:01 pm

Hi, I am using Mint 13 "Maya"with kernel v.3.2.0.23 Generic and wanted to know if anyone has upgraded their kernel and if so did it help and how did you do it.Should I wait for it to update itself?

You can upgrade your kernel if you wish. In the case it doesn't work, you can still use the previous kernel to boot into your computer normally (press SHIFT during bootup).
The command to upgrade everything, including the kernel is "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"

This does not upgrade the kernel in my default setup. This is the output:
XX ~ $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
[sudo] password for xyz:

bla..bla..bla.., then:

In order to upgrade the kernel on my default Linux Mint 13 Maya, I right-clicked the icon of the Update Manager in the systray, then chose "Preferences" and made Levels 4 and 5 *visible*. After doing that, you will see the Level 4 and 5 upgrades, such as the kernel, and you can install them manually. In other words, you see the kernel upgrades as available, but they do not install automagically. Check them on the list, and they willbe installed. The old kernel stays in your system and can be chosen at boot, in case the kernel upgrade borked something.

Don't say something when you haven't tried it yourself. That output you got was from the "upgrade" part; the "&&" completes things ONE BY ONE and not all at once. So if you actually pressed YES instead of NO, and waited for that part of the upgrades to install, you would have gotten a SECOND prompt with:
Code: Select all
After this operation, {around 100MB} of additional disk space will be used.

Can one update beyond 3.2.x? I have stability problems from a known bug, and would like to upgrade to 3.3 or 3.4. Is this simple/sensible?

Why soitenly! NYUK NYUK NYUK!
It's simple, just follow Kendall's post. He's the creator of Peppermint, obviously knows what he's talking about.

Many thanks, that is a really interesting thread. I will update to 3.4 Pangolin, but not jut now after a dinner consisting largely of venison and red wine followed by Talisker.

Worked like a dream. It still amazes me how easy things are in Linux. I abandoned Windows when Vista came out as I could do nothing with it, and have never looked back.

I have a question for you since you seem to be more detailed than 'm-p'. If I customize my kernel for my particular hardware, when LM notifies me that there is kernel update, will I need to customize the updated kernel?

It's been quite a while since I updated a kernel. Back in the mid 90's I customized the kernel in FreeBSD Unix 2.2.4. Since abandoning Unix for Linux I have only used the generic kernel provided by whatever distro of Linux I have installed.

Thanks.

Not unless you wished to. If your kernel is already customized and optimized to its maximum, there really isn't any point in customizing a whole new kernel all over again (not unless you want some new feature included in the older kernel). They actually have changelogs that you can see--whatever's new in the new kernel, what got fixed, etc...Here
