inxi updated

Post by craigevil »

inxi --help
will show you all of the options

-xxx Show extra, extra, extra data (only works with verbose or line output, not short form):
-S - Adds panel/shell information to desktop output, if in X (like gnome-shell, cinnamon, mate-panel).

h2 just added the panel info last night after someone running Mint asked him for it.

inxi -Sr is used often on the Mint/LMDE forums, now with -Sxxxr it will show even more info

$ inxi -Sxxxr

this feature request was based on esteban1uy's

Code: Select all

lsb_release -a;ps -A | egrep '(cinnamon|gnome-shell|gnome-panel|mate-panel|plasma-desktop|xfce4-panel|lxpanel)'
trying to bring it into inxi and with a cleaner output, it looks like h2 succeeded.

regarding the use of

Code: Select all

sudo inxi -U
just a small note: it's the only situation when we need/should use inxi as root, all the other times inxi should be used as user even because (remembering for example the -G output) as root the readings are completely different.

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Sxxx
System: Host: amadeu Kernel: 3.2.0-2-amd64 x86_64 (64 bit, gcc: 4.6.3)
           Desktop: Gnome (Gtk 3.4.2) info: gnome-shell dm: gdm3 Distro: Linux Mint Debian Edition

to make it easy to update, do: chown <username> inxi

Then you do not need to be root to update it.
$ inxi -U
Starting inxi self updater.
Currently running inxi version number: 1.8.7
Current version patch number: 00
Updating inxi in /usr/local/bin using svn server as download source...
Successfully updated to svn server version: 1.8.9
New svn server version patch number: 00
To run the new version, just start inxi again.

h2 also redid the man page for inxi.

To install it become root then do:
wget -O /usr/share/man/man8/inxi.8.gz http://inxi.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/inxi.8.gz

He is adding it to inxi -U so it should install the next time you update inxi.

To view the man page just do:
man inxi

Hmm... at first I thought I should wait for the inxi package to update in the Mint repo since I have it installed from there.
Then I decided to check the versions and found out that the package version is 1.4.23-1 but inxi -V shows 1.7.28-00 :shock:

Now what should I do? :)

:D meaning that you already updated inxi manually in the meantime and forgot about it :lol:

i spoke with Clem in IRC about updating the inxi pkg in the lmde repo (it's really really outdated) but the installer depends on inxi, so it's not a trivial update (for him > it's perfectly fine for the users)

regarding the main ed. (i guess that ubiquity doesn't need inxi) it will be easier to see an inxi update.

I honestly can't remember I've updated it... my memory must have failed me :D
The only thing I've updated manually is sgfxi, but as I understand from the FAQ, inxi should not update automatically since I use only sgfxi (without smxi).

As you can see the current version of inxi is 1.8.9, h2 has been quite busy lately adding more info to inxi including raid, panel, dm.
