Chrome Upgrade no worky! [SOLVED, sort of]

Postby PiperKev on Wed Jun 27, 2012 6:40 pm

Hey, all!

I'm currently on Maya MATE 32-bit, and this afternoon MintUpdate upgraded my Google Chrome from version 19.0.1084.56 to version 20.0.1132.43. Suddenly, it won't start. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a solution?

Cheers,
Kevin

I have also. And no I don't.

On my desktop:
Running LMDE 201204 Mate CLEAN INSTALL last night. google-chrome-stable 20.0.1132.43-r14. Using system monitor I see 2 listings for chrome, with 2 different ID's, both show as "sleeping". When I try to kill the first one on the list it says it's a zombie. I kill the second and they both end.

On my laptop:
Same version of LMDE and Chrome. Same thing with the exception that I got what reminded me of a BSOD with this sad face computer icon thing. And then it stopped working. And it happened just after I upgraded Chrome.

I removed it on both computers and re-installed several times, with no luck.

Chromium 17.0.963.78 (Developer Build 125577 Linux) Debian wheezy/sid works just fine, is that matters/helps at all.

So any ideas? Anyone?

I'm guessing that it something in chrome.

Tonight I used DBAN to blow up my hard drive and did a completely clean install. And still nothing. It still acts like I said in my other post. So now what? Anyone heard anything?

My machine is acting different.

Chrome runs and starts up but takes a long time to load tabs. Then it becomes unresponsive for about 5 seconds, then works for about 3 seconds. It alternates between these two states continuously.

It's like something is running every 3 seconds making the program unresponsive for 5 seconds. Unusable for sure.

I'm on mint 13. Today at work I'll see if my mint 11 machine behaves differently - I don't think it was "upgraded" yet to 20.xxxxx.

version 20, thats what they call bleeding edge - ouch!
its probably google's own new version of flash that will cause problems.
spread the word, Chromium (NOT Chrome) works best in Mint. use latest STABLE version.

Latest Stable Chromium - how to:

1. go Software Manager and uninstall Chrome
2. add the PPA for Chromium stable - this will keep Chromium updated to latest stable version, thats what we like :D
open a Terminal from menu, or hit <Ctrl>+<Alt>+T, then enter
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily/stable
sudo apt-get update
3. install Chromium from Software Manager, or open Terminal and enter
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

Done.

Is there a way of preserving Bookmarks from the Crome install? I obviously can't export to an html file from Chrome, and I'd hate to lose them...

so long since i saw chrome.
you should be able to export then import.

Chrome: try top-right - spanner Menu > Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager > Organise > Export Bookmarks to HTML

then

Chromium: top-right - spanner Menu > Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager > Organise > Import Bookmarks to HTML

That would work great if I were able to start Chrome!

I was just wondering if there was a Bookmarks file or files that could be moved to the Chromium profile?

That worked great!! Chromium works fine, and I was able to just move the Default folder into it, and all my bookmarks and such were preserved!!

Thanks again, mint-me!!

Good idea! Basically, I went into .config/google-chrome and moved the Default folder to my home folder. I then uninstalled Chrome using Synaptic and installed Chromium using the procedure you listed in your post. After installation, I went into.config/Chromium and renamed the Default folder to Defaultold (Doesn't matter what I renamed it to, I just didn't want to lose it in case this didn't work). I then moved the Default folder that I had moved from Chrome into the .config/Chromium folder.

When I launched Chromium, all of my bookmarks and settings from Chrome were there!

Cheers,
Kevin
