Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Using LinuxLive USB Creator i was able to successfully install LM13 Cinnamon on a Dell Vista 32bit.
Now i would like to install Xfce to see the differences that could help me to decide which is better for old computers.
A DVD-RW with .iso couldn't do the trick (and Lili couldn't do it either but that was expected).
Any tip would be welcome!

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Can be done install xfce4(meta package) and(optionally) xfce4-goodies (another meta package)
the current repos will have 4.8! If you want 4.10 (like the new RC) you'll have to add the PPA (on RC source ISO
)http://ppa.launchpad.net/xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10/ubuntu precise main
Won't be exactly like RC (but close)

Jay,
That's fun!
I got the 4.8 in but i'll need some coaching for the last stretch.
I've got an AMD but i notice there's a bunch of files there.
Which one to click on?
oops! just caught your last post!
So, will be better to hold on and install 4.10 stable huh?

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Sorry
thats what I read around on various sites '4.8 has trouble upgrading to 4.10' I think because thing rewritten plug-ins merged config files are changed and so-on
They don't like to mix!
You can try activating the PPA and see what upgrades (I would try to Purge as much of 4.8 as can find) then try upgrade (and cross fingers)
OR stay with 4.8 (read at 'xfce.org' whats changed and what (if any) might be important for you.

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Jay, i did mention i hoped to install Xfce Maya (which is not 4.10 right?) 13 RC.
If there's a "ppa" for that one too, can you help me out with that too?
Thanks!

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Info
They are using th 4.10 PPA on the 'XFCE Maya (13) ISO RC. So the PPA is needed to somewhat be like the New ISO.
Becase the decision to build a XFCE 13 came after the Cinnamon/Mate came out their probally isn't a 'meta package' for the (Mint version of the XFCE desktop either.
But the apps and such follow whats in Mate/Cinnamon (mostly) edition anyways.

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
J.Jay,
This almost like chess game codes for me.
I can play the game but i have a hard time with learning those codes (ref. to "ppa").
If i catch your drift correctly, it will be better to wait for Xfce official release.
Then i can install it via Software Manager?

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Adding a PPA really is not that hard
1. open synaptic package manager
2 .click on settings (on menu bar )
3. click repositories
4. click 'Other Software" tab
5. click 'Add' Button
6. Enter 'Apt line 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10/ubuntu precise main' (without quotes ('))
7. Click add source button
8. make sure new source checked
9. reload packages (on main screen of synaptic)
All done install/UN-install packages using this new source (PPA)
J.Jay
P.S. their is a CLI method thats just as easy but with my spelling and typing skills I prefer using a GUI tool

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
J.Jay,
Did as you instructed but i can't it to be "accepted".
Took brackets away of course.
The "add source" button doesn't activate.
BTW, if Xfce 4.8 can work with MintMenu then i might be content with that (seeing that it already worked fine).
But then again, if i can get 4.10 it would be cool.
If not, would next "official" upgrade be "installable" on 4.8?

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Sorry try
line without 'precise main' tacked on end. or edit one of the DEV ones (normally won't use source code) the apt line is correct (as 13 using) precise and main go into the next fields.
**don't know may need keyring/password to activate**
Yes I believe the next ediion (if mint keep it going ) will be 4.10. (X)ubuntu uses 4.8 offically and 4.10 unoficailly (PPA) that mint13 based on. (X)ubuntu 12.10 that mint14 (presumally) will be based on already uses ofically 4.10.

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
I was hopin' you'd write back J.Jay!
Probably watching the European soccer today...
Did try before you had posted to remove "precise and main" but that didn't do it either.
I'm sorry, i don't follow you on editing "DEV" ones.
Did however notice that there were remnants of Xcfe 4.8 still lurking on computer.
Would probably be good to try and remove those to and try again with Synaptic Package Manager.
Dat's enough for today. Sweet dreams!

Nope American (and not big sports fan)I was hopin' you'd write back J.Jay!

To edit dev one
use synaptic and go to repos to edit as stated...
1. click on one of the un checked ones (I use the dev ones)(probably don't need source code)
2.click on edit button
3.You see a pop-up with 5 fields
4. make sure the 'Type' reads Binary
5".URI' change to above 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10/ubuntu' (no quotes)
6.'Distribution' reads precise
7. 'Component' reads main
8. click OK button
That should do it unless you need a keyring/password (not sure how to do that)
If no you can use the 4.8 stuff (as in current repos)
I tried XFCE on Mate/Cinnamon Mint 13 before the RC (LMDE still defaults 4.8 also) and liked it But the RC came along!

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
J.Jay,
This is going to be longer than planned...
Me make booboo and probably deleted more Xfce files than necessary.
Now i can't even open Synaptic or update software.
Here's an error message that appears when opening Terminal:
E: Malformed line 10 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
There's a big red x on update manager and it's not moving anywhere.

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Sorry if you Borked system
But
If your going to have to reinstall, you may want to install LMint 13-XFCE RC (make sure have a backup/clonzilla/remastery ect) then install Cinnamon (theirs a meta package for it) and mate if you want.
Won't have to deel with Source list (PPA) for XFCE 4.10 (already included)
J.Jay
P.S. this is 'LMint 13' as stated not 'LMDE' right?

Re: Would like to install Xfce Maya over Cinnamon
Welll, after finally finding the F key to boot from DVD/R, i managed to overrite existing LM 13 Cinnamon with Xfce RC!
It's not easy working between Windows and Linux!
Thank you so much for hanging in there J.Jay!
I can't mark this one as "solved" 'cause the answer is not appropriate right?
