Post by bmike1 »

I need to know if upgrading is worth the trouble. What are the improvements of mint 13 over mint 12?

Well, it may be a consideration that Linux Mint 13 is a long term support (LTS) release. It is supported till April 2017 (5 years), while Linux Mint 12 is supported till April 2013 (1.5 years). Other improvements are the usual newer versions of programs and kernel. See below links for some more input.

What is new in Linux Mint 13 Xfce: http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_maya_xfce_whatsnew.php

with mint 12 I had to upgrade the kernel because after 10 -120 minutes the kernel would panic. Do you think I'll have the same problem with 13?
**edit**
It would panic if I was running the computer on the battery rather than A/C.

Is there a way to apt-get the upgrade instead of burning a CD?

Yes, there is. It really is probably more of a headache than reinstalling, though.

I don't understand. What panicked? And what do you mean by panic?

@cwwgateway the kernel panicked, see OP's earlier comment on the kernel panics on Linux Mint 12.

@bmike1 from a question about the improvements of mint 13 over mint 12, this is now turning into a support request. Suggest you make a new topic for that in Installation & Boot. Please boot from the installation DVD and run the following command from the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxc 0
and include that output in your new topic in Installation & Boot for others to help you. It seems you have some hardware that is badly supported by its manufacturer on Linux, and with the asked information others may be able to help you resolve that.

naaaaa. Mint 12 works flawlessly so I'll just continue using it until such time as it becomes necessary to upgrade. This topic was suppossed to be about the improvements and as none were posted it is my assumption that there were none. As to the support issue, like I said before their were no problems with the OS after the kernel upgrade. And if I didn't need to run it on battery I wouldn't need to upgrade the kernel.

thanks for the link.... it looks as if there are no improvements. Mint 12 works OOTB (not counting the kernel upgrade) so I'll be happy with that!

Personally, I like to stay as close to the default installation as possible.

Any personal tweaks I do I write down on a gedit text file.

And I am always prepared to reinstall because I like to experiment with different distros. It is good for the learning process, at least for me.

But unless 13 turns into a complete bust, 12 is obsolete for me.

But that is just me.

I just thought I might share that.

with all the probs that people are having with crashing etc I would stick with 12 for the time being. I have switched back to mint 12 with the newest Cinnamon and all is working as it should again.

I'm not sure about mint 12 because i m using mint 11 all the way. Recently i have upgrade to mint 13 cinnamon edition and found out it is fascinating and pretty fast.
It is just my experience.
