Missing Files in .iso downloads

Postby CrashedAgain on Thu Jul 05, 2012 3:34 pm

I have been trying to install Mint for several days but I am unable to download a bootable .iso image.
My downloads appear to be missing the operating system.
Attempting to boot stops at the "boot..." message. I typed "--help" and got a "kernal not found" message.

Checking the .iso image shows what appears to be several folders missing:

crashedagain@crashedagain-laptop:~$ ls /media/tmp
autorun.inf boot casper install isolinux md5sum.txt mint4win.exe preseed

same check on a normal ubuntu 12.04 image and on an xubuntu image gives:
crashedagain@crashedagain-laptop:~$ ls /media/tmp
autorun.inf dists md5sum.txt preseed wubi.exe
boot install pics README.diskdefines
casper isolinux pool ubuntu

I have tried several versions (Mint 12, Mint 13 Maya, Mint 13 cinnamon) and samples from several mirrors and always get the same results.

Is there a problem with the files on the mirrors???

Mint is 'based' on ubuntu, it is not ubuntu so comparing them is like comparing apples and pears. To check a download you need to check if the MD5sum is the same on both the downloaded .iso and the mint website.

Is there a problem with the downloads as you get the files? ie is your net connection ok and not having issues?

Not sure what your starting point is - are you already a linux user? Just want to be sure you are downloading the .iso file and then burning it to a dvd.
Which begs the question of whether there were any errors in burning the dvd to make your boot disk. (Or alternately doing a similar procedure for USB boot.)

If you have some more information about system, what you have attempted, etc. then more assistance might be rendered. I have not downloaded from any of the mirror sites in some time but they usually are ok when I have.

Do a site search for "mirror" or mirrors. I think there are some others who have asked about this, but I dont have the time right now to dig any further.
Good luck.

Yes, I am a long time Linux user.....currently using ubuntu 10.04.
Yes, I am downloading the .iso file and burning to a dvd. Also trying make a flash drive using "Startup Disk Creator" (same result)
I don't think it is a system problem. I have tried on both my netbook & my Desktop. (both are "Acer" machines, the netbook is an early "Aspire One")

It is not like comapring apples & pears.....any "run from cd" disk must contain the operating system and an applications repostiroy.
On ubuntu the repository is in the "pool" folder and the op system is in the "ubuntu" folder.
Other ubuntu based system discs (eg xubuntu) have the same layout but in Mint theses folders are missing.

Will do a search ASAP....

(Edit): search "mirror" gets 1558 hits, 78 pages. Checked the first dozen pages, found nothing relevant.

I just downloaded LinuxMint XFCE Maya from University of MD mirror. It burned a clean DVD and live booted Mint and ran Movie player, etc. So at least one mirror I can say worked for me.
I am keeping Mint 12 Lisa on my system now because it works well and I see no real advantage to the latest upgrades. I will upgrade after a while and most of the kinks are worked out. I hope you can get your solution without lots of trouble. Take care. MrBob22

Could you please post a directory listing of your DVD?

one file, md5sum.txt
I cant tell if the screen shot will show up
Let me know if you want to know the contents of the folders.

I also looked at the dvd i used to install Mint12 and this is the file directory:
bob@bob-desktop /media/Linux Mint 12 32-bit $ ls
boot casper install isolinux md5sum.txt preseed
Looks about the same as the Mint13.

Here is a post by a guy who also had trouble booting Mint with his Acer computer.
Not sure your solution is in here but its an interesting read anyway IMHO.

Thanks for the directory.

It looks like nothing is wrong with the disks, nothing is wrong with the disk drive (I just installed ubuntu & xubuntu) and nothing is wrong with the computer (it installs other distros) so I guess maybe it's just one of those things!!!

Will have access to try on an ASUS laptop in a few days. Maybe.......
