XFX Radeon 6850HD, should I switch to Nvidia ?

Postby morcar on Mon Jul 09, 2012 4:29 am

Just wanted to knowwhats better to use ATI or Nvidia graphics cards ?

I am asking because in a lot of the distros when I install the official drivers for my 6850HD opengl web games are running slow (about 20% slower than if i didn't even install this driver)

Does the Nvidia drivers run better or should I just stick with my ATI card ?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

NVidia drivers are definitely better for Linux. I myself run a GT430 using the OFFICIAL Nvidia driver: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
AMD's fglrx drivers suck. I cant use hardware acceleration on my laptop :(

The ATI/AMD situation is quite complex. Many users have no problem - but that may also be because they don't really stress the GPU. And there are also people who have problems with NVIDIA. Sometimes the nvidia driver installation fails, and you need to run sudo nvidia-xconfig in a console to get your system back to a working state. For both manufacturers, there are a lot of users who have no problems and some users who have problems.
However, generally, NVIDIA is working the best. For AMD the performance is often a bit lower, however 20% is really much.

Have you already tried using different driver versions? That may also solve problems for AMD. Catalyst 12.4 seems to be working pretty well on most hardware.

I had a major problem today with Linux Mint Maya where the software manager would not install anything.

It would download the item then just freeze so i went distro looking and now I am on Xubuntu and it seems even the ATI driver is running like a dream.

Maybe it was Mint I really dont know.

This week though I am buying a 60Gb SSD for my system which should really give it a kick in the arse.

Thanks for all the help though. Yet again the Linux community shows they are the best.
