I need help finding software alternatives

So i hear very often there is Linux software to do anything that i can do in Windows. Problem is, i don't know what software to download that will do what i want. The acronym naming schemes especially make it super difficult to even figure out what the heck it even is, much less can do for me.

Ok, so i'm 100% noob to Linux but extremely knowlegable at Windows and can build PC's..etc, i got Mint 13 (cinnamon edition) with all the 3rd party media codecs installed, got Grub2 ordered how i want it....now. i need software so i can get some work done. I made a list below of all the things i need my computer to do, so if someone could respond with a list of names for applications that can do those, i can find it and handle it from there....assuming its GUI based, i can't do and won't do command lines stuff. I do not know if Cinnamon has what i need already installed, but all i need is a name and i'll find it one way or another.

1. Convert MP3 and wav files to AAC files...basically rip CD's and convert MP3's to AAC. Can Audacity do this as a batch?
2. Convert videos like Mpg4, AVI..etc into Ipad file type...whatever that is. ....i want to watch vids on me ipad
3. RIP DVD's...still got some dvd's i want to rip....i know there is MKV maker? or something like that, but hopefully a converter (#2) could make them into Ipad format?
4. I need to place files into my Ipad...since there is no Itunes for Linux?, i need some alternative to it. I have PDF's and AAC music files i need to put on there and remove as desired.
5. I'd like to have a program like Imageshack Uploader....to easily and quickly upload my images and resize if possible.
6. i guess i need some kind of junk file remover to keep Linux from getting bloated with useless temp files and watnot.
7. A video Editor...doesn't have to be fancy, just basic editing of video's, but something simple to use. Normally i use Cyberlink Powerdirector on windows. so anything like that or Windows Movie Maker will do.

well that's a nice list n all...but seriously, i need more specifically to know which of those will do all the things i listed.
All that does is show me a list of countless apps and links to their pages...i don't really have 12 hours plus to sit and read them all.

So if you or someone surely has tried to do some of the basic things i'm wanting to do and just name some that will do what i need. Cause i then have to take the time to learn how to use the app..etc. I can't just go random and download one and hope for the best cause that would take forever.

You probably should consider dual booting Windows until you can take 12 hours plus to sit down and try something besides spoon-fed forum replies to your dilemma.

Welcome to Apple Hell. Apple goes to great lengths to make sure you can't use anything they haven't blessed. 17 suicides can't be wrong, Apple is hell. For DVDs, I'm an acidrip fan. For recoding music, try WINFF. for video editing OpenShot rocks. You don't need a 'cleanup' program fir linux, this isn't windowsland, isn't that great!

For cleaning up temporary files, use BleachBit. It is available in Synaptic Package Manager.
For editing video: OpenShot!
I think Banshee has some iPod playlist support.

thanks, those are great, i'll give them a shot. What about Itunes alternative?...can i access my ipad? i know Apple sucks, but i do need to put files on me ipad somehow

32 words...that is what you wasted. You could have listed 32 apps that from your experience would have helped my dillema...help is a key word here, this is what forums like this are for. H E L P. You ask who will? well people that have experience with such apps, that is who.

First of all, I suggest you tone down the attitude. I've been just like you, frustrated and looking for help here, rudely dismissed some people who tried to help me and it didn't end very well for me. Such behaviour won't get you very far neither on this forum nor in the Linux community in general. Just a friendly piece of advice

Now for your problem - I usually start looking for alternatives on http://alternativeto.net/, although LinuxAlt (which was already recommended) is a good choice as well. The problem with recommending applications is that it's a very subjective matter - someone could recommend an app that does everything you want, but you still might dislike it, so the best thing to do is just try them out yourself. As far as I know, Amarok, Banshee and Rhythmbox all support iPods, so you could use one of them as a replacement for iTunes. If you don't like any of those, you can always try running iTunes via Wine, though I'm not sure how well that works.

Then there's syncing with iPad...since I don't own one, I don't know how that works, but there is a way to make it work with Linux.

Here are a few programs that I know of:

• Video editing: OpenShot (for simple jobs, works well on most video formats)
• Video editing: Cinelerra (for heavy lifting - lots of features and documentation available, but of course more difficult to use)
• DVD Ripping: I think I had pretty good luck with thoggen at one time. I know you want it in apple format, and I think handbrake is a popular program for doing that conversion if you're willing to take two steps.
• CD Ripping: This post: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=4022 mentions a program called GRIP that is capable of ripping CD's to aac, but I don't think it is a converter for existing sound files. To be honest I generally use ffmpeg for all my media conversion needs (aside from ripping DVD's directly which ffmpeg won't do) but I know some people aren't comfortable with the command line.
