One User Two Language Desktops?

Post by Myself »

I have done this in an older version of Ubuntu a few years ago for a Doctor - English, Dutch & Chinese - but cannot seem to get it to happen with LMDE Xfce.

At the moment I need to be able to have two logins - different usernames - so 1 user can have one Desktop for one language and another Desktop for other language.

The languages are shown as already installed and I have installed additional packages via synaptic but still only get the options of US and En English at login.

One problem I have noticed is that to install additional packages for the second language is that Synaptic and Software Manager want to remove the English versions already installed - very weird!!!

Can any explain how to do this.

I think some later versions of Mint, no matter the locale language selection had to use the default USA Eng.. for menus etc in order to run..

You will probably need scim installed to better manage the language switch-over/selection..

  • The SCIM (Smart Common Input Method) IME comes pre-installed on the Debian distribution, but you do have to do a little bit of additional install and configuration to really get it to work.
Example..Japanese language scim..

Thanks DrHu,

Will try your suggestions later.

Everything has to be as simple as possible as I doing this for disabled people.

The laptop running Kororaa 17 in above pics had Vista Home 32 which has 214 different virii and trojans!!!
And... ...that was after a reformat and fresh install of Vista from Restore Disc by the owner!!!
I started recovery last night before bed and it took all of overnight to recover about 7000 needed files.

I have installed LMDE Xfce 64 also and would prefer to go with it for end users as I use it myself.

Oh! Big problem I've not solved yet with LMDE is the vicious flickering of the Noveau Nvidia driver (sometimes stable but mostly very unstable) - had same problem with Kororaa but it works fine after installing Nvidia driver - and when I installed the Nvidia driver on LMDE it refuses to launch X - just black screen with log-in prompt. NVIDIA GeForce 9100M graphics - More reading I guess!
