Need help troubleshoot slow browsing........

Post by hogfan »

The problem seems to occur in in all browsers and is VERY annoying. I'm on LMDE 12 Update 4, on a Dell XPS 14Z. The Wifi chipset is Intel Centrino 6230 Wireless N capable. Here is my out put from iwconfig:

Code: Select all

wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"mynetwork"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:aa:bb:cc:cc:dd
          Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=51/70 Signal level=-59 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:19 Missed beacon:0
I have AT&T U-verse gateway that supports up to Wireless G. On my 9 year old laptop running Windows 7 I have an old Linksys Wireless G dongle plugged in and it maintains 100% signal strength to the wireless network. However, my LMDE laptop fluctuates wildly between 60% - 9x% Wifi signal strength. Sometimes browsing will go smoothly and then it will just "spin" waiting for response from the page. I can compare the same site on both laptops and the windows machine loads the page instantly and LMDE machine much slower. If I ping google from a terminal I do not get any packet loss and the response times are about 50 ms (same as on the windows machine). I'm not sure how to ts this at this point, but I need to get this fixed. Suggestions? Any help is appreciated.

Do you have the iwlwifi drivers installed?

Yes. They are in the latest kernels from what I read. Removing and re-installing the intel drivers from synaptic seemed to fix the problem. Very strange.

I've always manually installed the drivers for my system. They're always "in the kernels" but never seem to work quite right until I install it myself. I'm glad you got it fixed :)

Hmm. The WIFI signal still fluctuates between 50% - 95% after updating the to the latest drivers from the testing branch. Something still has to be going on. I find it absurd that when I'm in the same room as the Wireless router I do not have and maintain 100% signal strength. Any other ideas?

Not sure, what program are you using to measure the signal strength?

I'm just using the "mouse-over" on the Wifi icon in the Mint Menu bar by the clock.
