[SOLVED] Larger Mouse Pointer?

Post by donnwest »

I'm a rank newbie, using Mint 13 Cinnamon on an Acer netbook.

I'd like to increase the size of my mouse pointer, and have searched this forum until I'm bleary-eyed, to no avail.

Can anyone help?

Find a mouse cursor theme that meets your needs - try www.gnome-look.org and browse the X11 Mouse Themes category
Download the desired theme
Extract it to ~/.icons
Then use Menu>Preferences>Cinnamon Settings>Themes>Other Settings to select your theme from the "Cursor Theme" drop down menu

I use Obsidian, which is about twice the size of a standard cursor

Thanks, Oscar. I found a scheme I like (Polar..the white version of Obsidian) but I can't find the ~/.icons folder. I'm searching in Nautilus, and I have "Show Hidden Folders" checked, but I can't find it. Do I need to create it?

If ~/.icons isn't there creating it should work
The other option is to extract to usr/share/icons

I found usr/share/icons, but apparently I also don't know how to search in Nautilus. I tried */.icons and found nothing. I had to manually drill down to it.

I'll try that folder. I recognize some of the files in it from other theme options.

I guess I'm destined to live with the small pointer.

I figured out how to extract to the usr/share folder (had to learn about permissions), and the Cinnamon settings saw the theme, but there was no change.

Then I figured out how to create an icons folder in my home folder, and extracted the themes again, to the new icons folder. Again, no change.

Belay my last...it appears we have changed cursor themes. I discovered it when I launched Nautilus again. The 'busy' cursor was indeed different, and from that point, the pointer was also...and it is now larger.

When I restart Cinnamon, or restart the computer, the original default pointer is present, but when I start using the system, the new ones come into effect.

Thanks, Oscar....this one appears to be solved.

Thanks to all for the info.
I have Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon 1.5.2 and created a .icons folder in my home folder, downloaded an X11 mouse theme, and it shows up on the list of cursor themes ready to use. This is all working inside VB 4.1.2 perfectly and smoothly. Mint Cinnamon is by far the easiest Linux to configure and I've tried (way too) many over the years.

Solution for the Non-Geek

If you prefer using the Software Manager rather than doing it yourself, just open the software manager and search for ComixCursor.

ComixCursors is a set of mouse pointer themes for X11 in the style of comic-book art.

I chose the right handed version.

Then open the Cinnimon Preferences and choose Theme. Then choose the Other Settings tab and choose the Cursor theme.
Check out the Huge versions for the largest in the color of your choice.

Maybe there are other large versions, but I didn't see any in the Software Manager.
Maybe someone should add some traditional large cursor choices to the Software Manager, but unti lthey do, these work very nicely.
