Have LMDE update 4 and cinnamon desktop. Tried to install VBox v 4.1.8 and clicking start gives error "Fatal: Could not read from boot medium. Sysyem halted!" Also in Setting, Devices I noticed that there is no USB connection. Thanks for the help.

Boot media, your CD perhaps is not readable, you can check if it can be opened on the Linux host side: seeing if it is readable there.

Virtualbox (vbox), you need to be in the vbox user group, will be there if Virtualbox installs correctly
--the simple way of getting usb for a plug in device, such as a data card (usb pendrive etc.), is to open that usb device on the linux host side, and then it will be available in the virtualbox guest
And since you would always be starting Linux before loading the Virtualbox guest, it is only a matter of a few clicks
--but if you don't want to do that and instead prefer it to be always available in the gust, you can edit /etc/fstab (Linux host) to include the usb device, or another way, a usb.conf file. There will be guides here these forums, use a search " lmde enable usb virtualbox" or something similar or use the Internet for like instructions/guides..

Postby benjie1 on Wed Jul 25, 2012 12:43 pm

Have LMDE update 4, gnome, 32 bit, cinnamon desktop, and can't get VB to start. Am in a users group and dkms is installed. Click start, it says FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted. Downloaded VB from Oracle and installed extensions for same version and guest addition too. Almost there??? Please help. Thanks. Bob

sorry didn't mean to double-post. New here and the problems in getting started with VB were similar and appeared as a double post. Still have troubles getting VB to start. It is the No bootable medium found error. I guess it needs to find win 7.iso from my cd and I can't get it to do that. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it, Hope this doesn't seem a double post. Thanks again Bob

After a bit of time and effort I got VBox to work great with win7 as guest. Did it myself by trying over and over and using Google too. Problems were these (for me) if it helps any newbies.
1 .Trying to figure out which version of VB is right for lmde. It isn't listed on Oracle's site like Ubuntu or Fedora and others. Finally found a reference to using v 4.1.18 "squeeze"
2. In VB set up with New, the right side where storage is, was blank. Clicking on storage opened up things tho.
3. Boot order. Wow what a pain that was to get right. It is CD/DVD Drive first, hard disk 2nd, then floppy and last is network. All are checked except network.
4. Worst and most painful: getting the win7.iso (from a DVD I have) to be recognized by VBox. Kept getting the Fatal: No bootable medium found. System halted! Finally got it but it wasn't easy. Much trial and error.

And sorry about the ramblings of a newbie here but I did it in hopes it will help other noobs. Thanks Bye Bob
