Hello from Colorado USA

Post by b4d93r »

Greetings everyone!

I finally decided it was time to register and stop being a watcher as I've decided to take me Linux experience to the next level. So, my name is Steve and I'm from Colorado in the United States. I work in IT for a large retailer but mostly support windows based applications and servers. I've been a linux hobbyist for a little while now but I primarily deal in Windows. I've been aware of linux for quite some time and have dabbled a little here and there with it but could never really settle on a version I liked or found easy for me to adapt to until I found Mint.

I've always loved the concept of linux in the fact that it's a free operating system and you can do so much with it but could never get past two specific obsticals. A lot of command line stuff and the dependency I have on certain windows based applications. This kept me from really diving into it. However, I have become a little more confident in the command line and how some things work in linux and with the ever evolving desktop of linux becoming more and more user friendly I'm really enjoying it. I still haven't been able to make a full conversion yet as there are still some windows based applications I'm dependent on but I am experimenting with getting them to work in Wine. I have converted my Compaq Mini 110c-1000 to Mint Maya and love it there! I just have to get past the desire to make it like a full desktop. It doesn't quite have that kind of power. I'm setting it up to be my travel system, primarily internet, email, mobile blogging, ect. I do have it set up to where I can VPN into work and do some stuff there if needed. I tested this out during HP Discover 2012 this year. It worked pretty well other than the small screen on my mini was slightly annoying to work with.

Other than that, my next project is themes. was playing with them last night and really hosed up my test system. But thats what a test system is for! I look forward to talking with all of you and gaining some great knowledge.

Steve

Hi Steve, welcome to the Linux Mint forums :D Thanks for joining the forums!

Be sure also to check out the Community website (tutorials, hardware and software reviews, ideas). You can also chat in real-time with other Linux Mint users. In the KDE Menu, in the Internet section, start the application Quassel IRC. After a short setup of your account you will be connected to #linuxmint-chat for general chat and #linuxmint-help for support with other Linux Mint users.

Have fun with Linux Mint
