MATE 1.4 is imminent!

Post by squeezy »

Just read this in the MATE forum, http://forums.mate-desktop.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=426

Lots of activity on github preparing packages for the 1.4 release and one of the MATE team members speculates it will be ready within a week!

I wonder, will it filter into Mint 13 or perhaps make it into UP5 for LMDE?

Oh that is good news :D I'm looking forward to it. If not flowing into Linux Mint 13, hopefully a PPA will be available to update it.

I suppose one could always add MATE's own Precise repo to Maya to get the updates. I know I'll try

Which PPA did you use, werkman2? Do you mean one of the MATE repositories? PPA and repo shouldn't be used synonymously.

Well, just did a fresh wheezy/MATE install using this repo:

Code: Select all

deb http://repo.mate-desktop.org/debian wheezy main
Running nicely on MATE 1.4 now :D

This post was in the support section for Linux Mint main edition (based on Ubuntu), but I guess it should be in the LMDE section. Moved it

Sorry for missing it was about LMDE, and rambling about PPAs...

Haha! It started out as a Main Edition post when I was playing with a Mint 13 variant build up. I was on a Debian kick today

Overall very similar to ver 1.2, but that's to be expected. One thing I did enjoy, the Calculator button on my keyboard now starts mate-calc. It used to give an error about not being able to find gcalctool :D

The two things that keep me from using it full time are still present though. Media buttons on my keyboard still will not control Banshee, and the keyring still has problems not remembering passwords for the session.

I'll still keep checking out the progress. It always feels so nice to return to the familiar interface, plus it's a pretty responsive DE.

I love MATE, it's pretty much the only choice for an old Eee 901, but that problem with keyboard shortcuts is so damn infuriating

For some reason I can't upgrade MATE. I've added the debian repo and some 1.4 packages are there - but most of them (including all upgrades of the 1.2 versions on my system) simply aren't. So there is nothing to upgrade. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Maybe this is somehow connected with the repo issues mentioned in the announcement:
Important:
We are experiencing difficult with packages.mate-desktop.org. During the update process, if you encounter connection problems, please use repo.mate-desktop.org instead of packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/. Also, please note that it is repo.mate-desktop.org and NOT repo.mate-desktop.org/repo/. If you are a Linux Mint user and make this change, remember to change /etc/apt/preferences as well.

Already tried that. Same thing - a few packages do show up, but most are not there. Nothing to upgrade.

I must be doing something wrong, but I can't find what.

Hmm... okay, let's try to figure it out. Please run the following commands:

Code: Select all

inxi -r

Code: Select all

cat /etc/apt/preferences

Code: Select all

aptitude -F "%p %v %V" search mate
and post their output here.

Yeah, I figured it out. I forgot to set the repo in /etc/apt/preferences. Thanks Monsta - your post made me realize that.

Really, the fact that only those packages I didn't already have installed were visible should have clued me in.
