Update Pack 5 release date? [Released Sept 17, 2012]

It is easy to tell that there are no Debian testing users on this thread.

My production OS is Debian testing. I have, for nearly 2 months, had the entire xorg stack pinned. Why? it breaks fglrx-driver and my crappy card needs it to work. The xorg stack in Sid works with my card even if it is missing fglrx.

There are things that will not work there without the driver but on the whole the system works.

LMDE has to put this stuff out when it is stable on the vast majority of hardware. These things are not up to them. This is a case of having to wait for Debian.

As far as FF is concerned you don't get timely upgrades from them for security issues. This is why Debian uses Iceweasel. Debian maintains it and upgrades more often than FF wants to do it. You can also add the FF repo and get upgrades from them when they are available.

Debian testing and the packages on it are in advance of most Linux releases. It is also more stable than most releases.

For those that are nervous I would suggest doing a dual or multi boot (if you have some crap like MS on your poor box) with Debian testing. It may work fine on your hardware. It does on most that don't use ATI cards and some that do use ATI. Like I said I have a very poor card.

LMDE by the way works on my box just fine with the generic drivers. I am impressed.

I use Debian testing and honestly, I get tired of having multiple new updates every day. Once wheezy goes stable, I plan on converting that one too to LMDE and getting my updates in UPs from now on.

It's easy enough to get packages from upstream when I want them.

I prefer Debian testing for myself. I recommend LMDE to noobs.

I like the way testing works. I can easily understand folks not liking it. Years of running Ubuntu dev releases as my production OS (don't try this at home unless you are willing to fix some serious breakage) has made Debian testing seem pretty damned stable and the update/upgrade cycles pretty mild most of the time.

For someone new to Linux, or just not entertained by constant upgrades, it would be daunting or, at least, suck in a major way.

LMDE does an excellent job of taming the instability of Debian testing. A fantastic job. Makes it boring to me.

Have to run and download a new image of LMDE Xfce 32bit (I only use 64) for installation on a new linux users laptop. This is not going to be a dual boot even. Will have to have wine installed for MS Office 2010.

Well... technically, Firefox isn't a part of any Update Packs. The same is for Thunderbird and various Mint tools.
They are in a separate Mint repo which may get updates independently of the Latest repos. You can see its contents here: http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=Debian

BTW, you can install Cinnamon on Sid with the additional incoming branch added to the packages.linuxmint.com repo. The Mint preferences file even works, no problems updating or installing GNOME Shell with it in place.

I have a question about the new libcairo2 and fontconfig stuff... where are they from this time? I see there's no "ubuntu" word in the package names. Were they taken from Debian Testing and patched afterwards?

GeneC reported a font problem in the UP5 feedback thread so I don't believe they were patched.

I think clem would have put his own versioning on them if they had been. I think they were pulled from Sid and put in the new Incoming branch so they would override the version available in wheezy.

He said it was an expected problem in Chrome/Chromium... other apps and the desktop weren't affected.
If nothing is patched, it means something has improved in Debian versions of these packages

Yep, you're right. I was simply speculating, should have checked the facts before posting. I really don't know what they're up to with the new Incoming branch
