Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
Took a while, but painless upgrade.
923 packages to install/upgrade
On reboot Nvidia failed, but expected as it was installed with sgfxi.
Reinstall Nvidia with sgfxi.
Both Cinnamon and Gnome Shell load with no problems.
All Cinnamon applets worked except for 'favorites'.
Most GnomeShell extensins worked. 'favorites' needed upgrading.
So far exerything is fine.
Only issue is font quality suffered badly in Chrome Browser (again expected, as it happend in both my SID installs.)
Fonts on desktop and all other app fine, just a problem in Chrome/Chromium browsers.
Fix is here. (thanks to el_koraco)

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
Clem,
just reporting that it works
did had much to test it yet but everything seems functional
only couple things i noticed during the upgrade:
- evolution-related lib are uninstalled:
this is safe to ignore, it's a replace with v. 3.4.3
- nvidia/dkms this time are in sync:
- in the end there's one package held-back:
i believe this a replace that apt can't handle with the dist-upgrade (there's one removal, one install and one upgrade in the same operation)
That's all for today further testings tomorrow
just reporting that it works

Hi, thanks for the work !
everything works fine.
I had a few initial issues with the Nvidia driver and mate-settings-daemon not starting properly, but now fixed.
solution for this specific issue : http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 5&p=613052
I hope to see Mate 1.4 included before the final release!

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
The update went fairly smoothly. I had to restart the mint update 3 times to get it to complete and answer 3 questions.
I have 4 external sources, bumblebee( http://suwako.nomanga.net/debian), chrome, spideroak and spotify. Bumblebee is nvidia related so it might have some impact on my issues but I don't think so.
Post reboot, I had no X. So I think it's another nvidia drivers problem. I've managed to get up into gnome fallback mode on the 302 drivers. glx is working fine, so I don't know quite why gnome shell doesn't like them and haven't researched it yet. I use the repos for nvidia. I manually linked the nvidia driver into /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ and reconfigured glx with update-alternatives to get a display. GLX is running pretty fast but it's not using the right drivers
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x209)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.3
I also had a problem with dbus reaching maximum connections for user root. I changed
<limit name="max_connections_per_user">100000</limit>
by adding a 0 in /etc/dbus-1/session.conf. Prior to that gdm3 would not start. Very nasty. I hope that I've not got something spawning connections in the background.
Xorg complained that udev is not working.
[ 47.447] (II) The server relies on udev to provide the list of input devices.
If no devices become available, reconfigure udev or disable AutoAddDevices.
Right now network manager isn't up. Haven't figured out why yet.
Overall the packages installed but fried my nvidia config.
EDIT:
Back up with Gnome shell after redoing update-alternatives for glx and selecting a manual mode for nvidia.
EDIT 2:
I have 442 /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-simple-slave processes running and gdm3 taking 43% of cpu. The complaint in all the different log files is:
** (gdm-simple-slave:11016): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to system bus: The maximum number of active connections for UID 0 has been reached
dmesg | grep dbus gives
[ 45.636592] colord-sane[2648] general protection ip:7fa3117d84bc sp:7fff1d894178 error:0 in libdbus-1.so.3.7.1[7fa3117b0000+44000] in libdbus-1.so.3.7.1[7fa3117b0000+44000]
I seem to remember hitting a similar error on another box, with the previous update pack.
EDIT 3:
Properly sorting out the nVidia driver issues cured my hundreds of gdm-simple-slave processes. I think dbus is still an issue though because tracker is complaining of reeiving no responses. dbus-monitor shows traffic and seems to indicate replies being sent.

Most of my updates came from debian unstable.
EDITING TO CLEARLY DELINEATE RESULTS (FEEDBACK):...
Everything appears to be functioning just fine.
I had to re-configure a theme for Midnight Commander
Had to re-uninstall cowuseless.
It is using about 5 more megs of RAM. I will take a look at services.
NOTE: The update manager says that I still have Update Pack 4. CORRECTION: I confused "Update Pack Available" (4) with "Last Update Used By This System" (5) when I changed back to my "regular" sources list.
My system is using Update Pack 5...
"current available 4"
"last used 5"
So far it's smooooooooooooth.
Good job Mint! I changed back to you from Crunchbang because Openbox installed uses less RAM than Crunchabng's default Openbox, and I don't have to log back in every time a game changes the screen resolution.
You say you've changed the resoloooshuhun
Well, you know
We're gonna have to log you in!
Just playing. I brought some useful things from Crunchbang to my Openbox session. Thank you Mint and Crunchbang.

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
I used these for the update:

# UPDATE 5

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/security testing/updates main contrib non-free

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
UP5 installed but the reboot has not been done yet.
It has been reported that I may have a trouble with X at reboot because the new driver 302.17 replaced the old one 295.20.
It spoke also about rmmod nvidia but I did not understand.
Now, I am afraid to reboot. What could I do?

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
This may be a stupid question but I'd rather ask and confirm what I'm thinking than not ask and be wrong. I've been looking forward to UP5 so when I saw it was released to testing I fired up MintUpdate and clicked the Update Pack Info button. It reminded me that my sources.list is pointed directly to Debian (testing), so am I right that UPs don't affect me any more? I'm guessing trying to go back to the Mint repos to test UP5 is a pretty bad idea short of a nuke and pave. Am I right there?
Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
Roger,
I sorted through my nvidia issues and it appears to be working fine on 302 now, at least for Gnome Shell.
My problems were added to by a local boot script that I have for switching between my Intel and nVidia graphics chips, which needed updating.
Run
update-alternatives --config glx
and check it's pointing at /usr/lib/nvidia. Consider a soft link if it doesn't exist:
ln -s /etc/alternatives/glx--nvidia_drv.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
If X appears to start but gdm/mdm fails to start you might need to consider the dbus config hack above. Hopefully not though.
Mint Update shows me on Update Pack 5, btw.
BostonPeng,
If you're on Debian Testing, then you are probably already more up to date than these packages. Testing is effectively upstream.

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
@non-portable:
That's what I was thinking. Thanks for confirming it so quickly, although it means I now have two groups of threads to not pay so much attention to: LMDE UPx and Mint KDE. I guess that's what happens when open sourcers go hybrid (LMDE + KDE). I'll still try to keep an eye out on the UP threads in case I can learn something to pass along.

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
Speaking of going hybrid, I'm finding that with testing frozen and sid not changing that much because of it, I can run the UP5 packages.linuxmint.com repo in sources.list and add the Mint preferences file on sid sources without problem. I guess I'm running a real LMDE Sid setupBostonPeng wrote: I guess that's what happens when open sourcers go hybrid (LMDE + KDE).
Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
Niiice squeezy! I thought about going with sid but decided I didn't have the time to pay the amount of attention needed so I stuck with testing. Although I'm thinking about going with the unofficial LMDE KDE ISO sometime this month.

It's pointing to /usr/lib/nvidia. I will try my luck at the end of the working day...
lots of conflicts on my system
[UPDATE]: All is well after doing 'apt dist-upgrade' except for the theme issue, which seems to be the same one squeezy reports later on. See screenshot in this thread: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&t=109092
--------------------------------
My update hasn't been going as smoothly as others'. I upgraded what I could without breaking the system. I'm using plain GNOME 3, in case that matters, although I've got MATE and Cinnamon installed.
Cinnamon, cheese, empathy, and various gnome components are all conflicting with each other and want to remove one another if I upgrade them.
Also, in my state of partial upgrade, something has gone rather wrong with the the display of many applications: white text on light grey background. Affected programs include Shotwell (upgraded), Rhythmbox (not upgraded, because it wants to remove rhythmbox-plugins and some libraries that seem possibly important), and Synaptic (in the Repositories box, but not the main window). Also, Nautilus won't start.

Re: UPDATE PACK 5 FEEDBACK THREAD
ragesoss,
i'm sorry to hear that it didn't go as smooth as it should for you and thanks for reporting it.
as i see it, your situation probably needs more troubleshooting, so i would advise you to open a specific topic here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewforum.php?f=198 where you could start providing some useful info as:
- upgrade method used;
- if available, any error in the last upgrade; otherwise provide the output of apt dist-upgrade;
- output of inxi -Sr
- output of cat /etc/apt/preferences
we can (in that topic) assist you troubleshoot this issue and feedback this topic here with the findings.
i believe this is a better way of doing it, remember:
