You can usually get some more info from starting those applications (xiphos, banshee) from the terminal and seeing what errors they give.
I have the same problem in with Xiphos in LMDE as MXGRIG, and in terminal, it starts up fine until this:
** (xiphos:2822): CRITICAL **: aurora_style_draw_box_gap: assertion `height >= -1' failed
** Message: on_notebook_main_switch_page
Segmentation fault
Any suggestions?
