Re: Give me some suggestions
scotthge, that sounds like there's a few firmware packages for your wireless card missing. Do you happen to have a broadcom chip?
Re: Give me some suggestions
Scotty,
those broadcom-related errors shouldn't stop you from booting:
1- because afaik you already installed before and booted up that system (and broke with those odd +1000 updates)
2- there's actually an issue with broadcom stopping booting but i never saw any report of it in debian (all the reports are from ubuntu or derivatives)
3- it's natural that you see those warnings about firmware missing while booting (actually it's a very interesting feature) but it's an warning not an error and once more i say, it shouldn't stop you from booting into the desktop.

Re: Give me some suggestions
My guess is that has to do with a wireless card (I've heard b43 before somewhere... I think it has something to do with broadcom). Anyway, do you really have your heart set on debian? Unless you really want it, you'd be fine with the ubuntu-based xfce edition.

Ok zerozero, I finally got to a point where I could answer your question. This is what I get when I typed inxi -Sr.

Re: Give me some suggestions
Scotty,
that is not the latest iso.
that is not the 201204 respin that you d/l from here >> http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=101 (assuming that you want the 32bit ed)
your iso has the 2.6.39.x kernel and the new one ships with 3.2
see here http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1979
also those repos are all messed up: duplicated entries, deb-src entries in there that most probably are of no use ( i see no real error apart from the duplications but that is not a vanilla sources.list)

Re: Give me some suggestions
Yes the image that is on the computer right now is the older version or re-spin of LMDE Xfce. It is the only version that will boot and install. The newer image found here, http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=101, will not boot or install. As I said before, it will start to boot up, then is complains about b43/ucode5.fw, then goes to a black screen and freezes. It will not even boot for a live cd , much less install. So I had the older version on cd so last night I tried it and it worked and installed.
The only problem with it is that when you go to update, everything goes smooth until you re-boot, then it is dead in the water. I had a suspicion that it was in the repo's. Do you have any idea how I can get the updates and upgrade to the newest version without it crashing, because the newer image will not even boot so I can install.
Thank you so much for your advise and expertise,
Scotty

Re: Give me some suggestions
Scotty,
sorry for the late reply,
if you have to go with the old iso make sure that:
1- the repos are like this nothing more in sources.list for now
2- update the system using the terminal with and post back here the output.
let's see if we can do it

Re: Give me some suggestions
IIRC there was some gstreamer-plugins-really-bad (or something like that - I remember thinking the name was funny) problem. Copy the error and google it, and you should find the solution in a forum thread.
Re: Give me some suggestions
well. I think I got everything fixed. I had to go with the old Xfce cd. Then I had to upgrade the kernel. then the updates worked like a charm. Everything is working but the menu for some strange reason no longer has a "quit", "restart", "logoff" options. The only way that I can shut the system down is to hold the power button. I have been at this all day and the only thing that I can not fix is the shut down problem.
Thank you zerozero for all your expertise. It is much appreciated.

Re: Give me some suggestions
Ok I think I have found the problem with not being prompted when I use the logout button. In "sessions and startup" menu there is suppose to be an item named "Prompt on logout". I had to add it to my Application Autostart menu. But I do not know what to put in the command box. Could someone tell me what the command would be for this item?
