[Solved] Problem update with package mint-search-addon

I've just tried to run updates on my LMDE 64 bit system and am getting the following error message:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mint-search-addon_2012.05.11_all.deb: unable to open '/usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/mint-search-enhancer@linuxmint.com/install.rdf.dpkg-new': No such file or directory

Enter these in order:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge mint-search-addon

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Thanks ..... actually needed to enter 'sudo apt-get remove --purge mint-search-addon'

That command wants to remove the mint-meta-common package in my case.

Hi, when i try to update the mint-search-addon package there is an error message like this:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mint-search-addon_2012.05.11_all.deb: impossible open "/usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/mint-search-enhancer@linuxmint.com/install.rdf.dpkg-new": File or directory does not exist

and i can't update this package. I'm using Linux Mint Debian with gnome-shell.

Just some errors since update and system has started using CPUs at 100% again but I cnnot see in Task Manager exactly what as it doesn't say (Also - Amazingly this Forum refuses to accept LMDE auto named screenshot picture files!!!!??? No big deal but I've had to go rename them):

One of the updates I have today is Mint-Search-Addon.
Error

Anyone know how to make it stop trying to install this?
I really don't even want this.

As suggested elsewhere about this problem - I was able to solve it by doing this:

Start Package Manager from Menu (bottom left corner of screen). In Search type: mint-search-addon Right click on Mark for Removal and click Apply. Do same Search again (if necessary) and mark for Installation and Apply.

The update manager encounters a problem and fails to update the mint search addon. I get this message back:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/mint-search-addon_2012.05.11_all.deb: unable to open '/usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/mint-search-enhancer@linuxmint.com/install.rdf.dpkg-new': No such file or directory

I have tried to install it several times after reboot etc. Is there a resolution to this problem?

I had the same problem, and the same solution (apt-get remove --purge mint-search-addon && apt-get install mint-meta-common) worked for me too.

However, I'm a bit curious as to some details about what caused the problem in the first place.

When I got the error, I checked the directory it pointed to, and it was a symlink to the ../../../share/linuxmint/mint-search-addon directory.
That directory only contained two empty directories, chrome and content - but I figure that's probably because the old version had been removed already.

More concerningly, both the symlink and the pointed-to directory were owned by my user, instead of by root.

After the reinstall, the symlink had been replaced with a directory, which contains the exact same content as the /usr/share/... directory now does, and everything is owned by root (as I would have expected).

So, I guess that either the symlink->directory change was accidental, or it was on purpose but they didn't check that plain upgrades were smooth.

What concerns me more, though, and makes me wonder, is the fact that these directories were owned by my user before the upgrade... Anyone have any insight on that?

Oh, and, I have a suggestion for the Mint maintainers: maybe the FF addons could be moved from Depends: to Recommends: on the mint-meta-common package? That way they would still be installed along with it in most cases, but wouldn't require users who don't want those extensions to uninstall mint-meta-common as well. Personally I have both of those extensions disabled (since I don't use them anyway, and IIRC they caused me some problems in the past (I admit to not remembering details, so could be wrong)) - I have my own set that I use, as I expect most people do, and would prefer to remove them from the add-ons list completely, but I don't want to lose out on updates and new stuff that might get pulled in via mint-meta-common...
