Burned Video-DVDs audio skips in home DVD player.

I burn a great deal of movies & TV shows. I shrink the video files using Avidemux, then I create an ISO file using DeVeDe, & then I burn the disc using K3B. I'm sure there are easier ways to do this but this is what I have found works. Though, every disc I have created this way, the audio skips every 5 minutes or so when played on my home DVD player. The sound will cut out for a few seconds and then resume in sync. Its nothing major, just an annoyance. I checked a store-bought DVD & the audio was fine, just to make sure my DVD player wasn't on the fritz. The discs also freezes up my DVD player. It will suddenly freeze & I can't stop, play, rewind, turn off, etc. the DVD without manually unplugging the player & replugging it in. This happens 3-4 times during a 2 hour movie. I'm thinking one of the programs I'm using along the way is causing this. I'm pretty sure its not Avidemux because I have burned a DVD without shrinking the files & the audio still skips & the DVD still freezes. I have also shrunk video files for my Ipod using Avidemux & the audio was perfect. So, I'm thinking either DeVeDe or K3B is causing this. Any ideas?

I've narrowed it down a bit more. Its not K3B causing the audio to skip. I burned the ISO file from DeVeDe using Brasero & the audio still skips. I guess something with DeVeDe is causing it.Is there another program that can shrink the files like DeVeDe does?

There is apparently a sync problem, saw when I searched avidmux forum, however it probably would help to cinfirm how audio works on the avidmux editor..

I also have to assume you use avidmux for its familiarity, even thogh DeVeDe could also compile (edit) and shrink a dvd package..

• DeVeDe also offers the option to create DivX discs/files for compliant home players. I usually did this with a DVD burner, by writing the video and subtitle files on a data disc, but DeVeDe's option seems simpler, although more time-consuming. This depends on your DivX player as well, so if yours is older and doesn't read "plain" data CDs, DeVeDe is your best bet. With this option I created a 419 MB file from a 175 MB one, but, in all seriousness, I have better chances to get it read and played on my old-ish player now.

• A quick note before we jump in: you can use only MPEG-2 .vob files. It's a bummer, I know, so if you have files such as some DivXes you want to include, you're going to have to convert them first. Hopefully, future releases will support DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4 and so on, but for now, you'll have to make do with just .vob support.

I've narrowed it down a bit more. Its not K3B causing the audio to skip. I burned the ISO file from DeVeDe using Brasero & the audio still skips. I guess something with DeVeDe is causing it.Is there another program that can shrink the files like DeVeDe does?

Brasero has some issues with Wodim. Also Brasero is not very stable like K3B. My best guess is that Brasero is causing the problems. On the Ubuntu forum there are a lot of topics about Brasero and what goes wrong with Brasero. So, my best advice to you: skip Brasero and use K3B.

Without being a literate into this subject, here are some thoughts:
1. A common DVD player, supports only a 4 MB framerate. This might cause your problem since any modern DVD burner supports more than 4 MB/sec.
Still, considering the DVD player's hardware limitation, you should avoid burning DVDs at hi speed.
This is where K3B comes into scene: When you setup properly the buring conditions, K3B will prevent the writing at a higher speed than "DVD compliant" which means 4 MB.
2. I had this issue some years ago, and I could solve it only using K3B, although I was using Windows 2K at the time. i used another machine with Mandriva on it.

I do one more step than you do in creation of the DVD and have found any sync issues long gone.

I use a program called ProjectX to DEMUX the downloaded/saved show. What that means is that it separates the file into two raw streams, one video and one audio. This is important because you cannot be sure what extraneous bits have been added. eg Topfield .rec files have extra headers in the video stream that need to be stripped out before burning.

I then use a CLI program called "mplex" to combine them back together into a relevant mpg file ready for dvd. Mplex is part of the mjpegtools suite of apps. This process actually redoes the syncing of video and audio, and does it in a form compatible with your dvd type ( ie pal parameters very different to ntsc).

You then use DeVeDe or any other dvd tool to create menus etc; but you do NOT need to recode the mpg file and then you burn the resultant iso with K3b.

I have never had a sync problem in hundreds of burns (even across formats) since adopting this method.
