Installing Linux Mint 13 on my MacBook Pro

Post by chrls »

Hi there, I have been trying to install Linux Mint 13 on my MacBook Pro 15", I followed the installation guide step by step and i replaced Linux Mint with iOS Tiger and did a full installation on the HDD. The problem is that everytime i eject the CD and reboot the computer, i get a folder icon with a question mark on it and then i get this screen:
________________________________________
GNU GRUB version 1.99-21ubuntu3
--------------------------------------------------------
Linux Mint 13 MATE 32-bit, 3.2.0-23-generic (/dev/sda2)
Linux Mint 13 MATE 32-bit, 3.2.0-generic (/dev/sda2) -- recovery mode
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
--------------------------------------------------------
________________________________________

and everytime i choose the first or the second option the computer will be restarted and gets back to this same screen.
I have repeated the installation several times and the same issue persisted. I am being able to run Mint 13 whenever i restart the computer with the Linux Mint 13 CD inserted, but without the CD it won't boot.

What might be the problem and how can it be fixed?

I appreciate your help.

Which installation guide did you use?

Newer Macbooks are using UEFI, actually a specific type of UEFI. Linux Mint 13 (like many other Linux distros) are using grub2 as bootloader, and there are still some issues with grub2 (release 1.99).

Since you are able to get to the grub menu, it looks like the UEFI boot is working. I would boot the live DVD and check the following on your hard drive:

1. grub.conf file in /boot/grub - you need to mount your hard drive first. See if the menu entries are correct and point to the right kernel files.
2. The /boot folder to see that the kernel files are there.
3. Check that the live DVD is OK (mdm5 check).

Unfortunately I'm traveling and only have my Macbook with me so I can't check other options.

Time has passed - have you been able to to install Linux Mint successfully? I.e. is everything OK now?
