Status of XFCE in Debian/Ubuntu

I would not do it to my main XFCE partition.
I have a spare partition that I use for experiments. If something breaks.. Not a big problem.
Just my luck Clem will probably port xfapplet and mint menu to LMDE in a couple of days.....

Me to Unfortunantly My computer and testing rig has my wife's on (Iwanted to play on itfor month now! she kill be if I touch it without giving her's (working) back. Other one wiped clean (going to try a 'Home-Media-center' hooked on Family room LCD TVEVENTUALY.

I thought I read somewhere that he would have XFCE 4.10, and Mint Menu for Update Pack 5...
Doesn't look like that will be..

@GeneC: Yes, we’ll focus on development and an LMDE update after KDE and Xfce editions are out. All improvements, including the mintMenu support for Xfce will make their way into LMDE.

No wonder I thought I heard it someplace.
Right now you have to have XFCE 4.10 for xfapplet (which is needed for MintMenu).
Don't know if that means Clem will have to wait for 4.10 to get out of experimental or if it can be patched for 4.8 (current in Debian).
I guess we will just have to wait and see.

For those running LMDE-XFCE and have upgraded to XFCE 4.10

I've continued upgrading 4.10 from where I left off here. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... =0#p621516

Only issue I had was that some of the panel plugins I used regularly were not available.
Searching the internet I found this on the CrunchBang Forums http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic ... d-plugins/

Starting at #6 are instructions for downloading xfce 4.10 panel plugins from source and compiling.
Download souce code tarballs from here. http://archive.xfce.org/src

I did the 'weather plugin' (its a new more inclusive one...real nice).
And 'date/time'.

Basically to compile the download tarball.

1. Downlad the tarball
2. Unzip it to your home folder.
3. Open the folder, right click on the sub folder inside. (then select open terminal here)
That should put you in somthing like (your name and computer, of course)...

4. Run

./configure --prefix=/usr

It will not complete. You will be prompted that some packages are misssing.
Seach for the package and install it.
Sometimes is just the .dev version of that file.
Sometimes not, and you can't find them....
Then, copy the name of the missing package and "google it". You will get several hits from other folks with the same problem. In those posts you will find the correct packge name to get from synaptic.
You will have to do this 4 or 5 times.
A little tedious, but interesting....

5. After that sucessfully completes..
Run

sudo make install

With luck and a little effort you will have a nice new weather plugin.....
