Great news! :)

Although I think I will stick to Linux Mint with gnome. It's more polished. But this doesn't matter now.

Congratulations for this awesome distro! :)

Would it be possible to turn the torrent on? I'm assuming it was deactivated until the official launch. I have it on my server ready to seed at ~2.5MB per second once it's up and going.

Hi,

I've asked Michael to turn it on. Hopefully it will come up soon enough.

Great news, though I to will stick with Gnome edition since it usually is more complete and polished, plus love mintMenu hehehe.

I don't see any seeders at all, just lots of leechers coming & going trying to get it. Do I have the right tracker? (torrent.lintelligence.de) I'm also trying to get LinuxMint-4.0-miniKDE.iso, no seeders or leechers there at all. Are there any other trackers where I might find one or both of these?

WOOOHOOO Mint 4.0 KDE GR is out.

Many thanks to all who helped with this release and Clem and the other two who I cant remember your names (sorry bout that) for putting together such an awesome Distro. The folks at Linspire should bow their heads in shame, with all that money and all those people they could not do what the small Mint group has managed to do.
Not only did you make a GREAT KDE release (keeping in mind I am still using the second beta since it works just fine, I am DLing the GR and will run on a test drive but as the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Beta 2 works fine so it stays until it breaks) but you built a Great Gnome release.
Also if I understand correctly, using the Goog search bar in the browser helps make Mint money. Done deal.

Have a question for anyone.

First. I play a lot with my PC, several distros tested every month. Most I don't like. Mint is great though. I think part of what makes that possible is that it has some proprietary stuff in it. Which is fine.

I am interested though in finding out how the totally free/non-proprietary/GPLed distros are coming along.
I know things will not work and that is OK. I do not plan on using anything other than Mint in the near future. But I would like to try the best of the totally GNU distros.

Does anyone have recommendations on what those might be.
Only the totally GNU/free distros please.

The best of the "totally free", well, there isn't such a thing, because of the kernel itself. The closest you'll find is the Debian project. Try Debian - it's a great way to learn the metadistro that Mint is built upon ;-)

Onto KDE:

Downloaded it using one of the severs, brought it in with no problems ;)

For those who think the GNOME version is "more polished", you're in for an incredible shock ;) I've got Mint KDE 4.0 Final running now, and I'm here to tell ya, it's EVERY bit as polished as GNOME, and probably more so ;) It's simply beautiful. You owe it to yourself to try it. You may still prefer GNOME afterward - they both have their strengths and advantages, but Boo has knocked one right out of the park with this one.

Is the default kernel pre-patched for the local-user privilege escalation issue that surfaced not to long ago? I didn't see it in the release notes, so I figured I'd just go ahead and ask.

Thanks,
DrCR

Hallo Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to inform you, that language packs during install will be downloaded but not installed
This happened with the "de" (Germany)packages. Internet connection was enabled and I saw that the packages were downloaded to HD, but installation failed  Packages were saved to /var/cache/apt/archive on Harddisc.

Can other non english speakers confirm that ? I am a bit frustrated :?

cheers
