Wired connection dropping

Post by cortexed »

Hello
I have installed the new Linux Mint 13 on my desktop which is plugged into the network by cable and it can connect but then stops working. For example I can get to google but then when I hit the search button it just sits there for a few minutes spinning and then errors out. (Starts to work for a minutes then just stops and can't do anything online) Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Sorry for the late reply. Life gets in the way of what you want to do.
Anyway here is the results.

System: Host: watchtower Kernel: 3.2.0-23-generic i686 (32 bit, gcc: 4.6.3) Desktop: Gnome Distro: Linux Mint 13 Maya
Network: Card-1: NVIDIA CK804 Ethernet Controller driver: forcedeth port: bc00 bus-ID: 00:0a.0
Card-2: Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps Network Adapter driver: rtl8187 usb-ID: 0bda:8189

As a note I had to plug in an old USB wireless card just to get any internet at all (pretty slow).
Thanks

This seems to have fixed my problem...course that would have been more difficult if I hadn't had the usb wireless drive...
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Of course at the moment it's working fine. The problem seems to be very intermittent.

i'm having the same problem. i think the issue is the realtek network card. network connection is great in windows 7 partition, but sucks in mint.

wait a second... did a system update on 9.29.12 and the connection has sped up crazy fast. maybe linux people fixed it?

looking at other threads, i don't see any cases of this problem being solved. apparently there is an unresolvable conflict between mint versions 11-13 and any realtek networking card. it seems the choices are between getting a different network card and using another operating system. Any suggestions on what network card would work better or what other linux OS would work better? I have a dual boot with Windows 7 and the network connection with windows 7 is fantastic, but I'd rather not use that for everyday applications.

I also have the same realtek wireless card. Is there any effort going into fixing this issue, or do I have to just give up on mint completely? I have noticed that when the connection drops, I can /etc/init.d/network-manager restart and the connection returns. But the problem occurs so often it makes it an enormous pain in the arse. Please, if anyone plans on working on this, let us know.

Thanks so much!
