Can not play avi, mkv or any video files in Mint 13

Post by pacman257 »

I just upgraded to Mint 13 Mate from Mint 11 Gnome with a clean install and when I try to play an avi file, I get sound but no video. Online videos play just fine and it doesn't matter what player I use. My primary choice is VLC. I have all the extra codecs installed but still no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Update: I booted up with a live cd version of Moon OS ver. 4 last night on a whim and had no problems watching avi files.

Yesterday I tried using a live cd of Mint 12 and Mint 11. I could play videos on 11 but nothing on 12 or 13. My solution was obvious. I uninstalled 13 and went back to 11. Life is good again. I guess the Mate desktop just doesn't work properly on this system.

Is your version of Mint 13 one that doesn't include the multimedia codecs by default?

No, it's the full DVD, I even went so far as to reinstall the extra codes no avail.

On a whim this morning, I downloaded Mint 13 XFCE to see if that would solve the problem. No dice. What happened to all the versions after 11 that would cause this? Could it simply be a hardware compatibility issue?

Ok, still playing around with this using different versions and found out that Pinguy 10.10 plays all my videos. Pinguy 12.04 does not. Is it something in an updated version of the kernel?

I don't know what is wrong.
I tested i845G with LM12 and didn't have problem play any video files.
In LM 12 GLX renderer for intel 845 is Mesa DRI
Maybe you can try don't use Hardware acceleration in media player.
VLC >tool>preferences>video , turn off accelerated video output (overlay)

Still no solution to this. If I disable the video acceleration in VLC it closes as soon as I try and play a file. I can still watch videos online through the browser though.
This one little problem is all that is keeping me from upgrading and I would really like to upgrade so I can get some updates to the os.

Still no solutions? I'm having this issue on Mint 15 KDE on a system76 laptop.

Posting some MPlayer output to further the understanding of the problem:

I'm going to attempt to solve the issue, but I plan on installing arch anyway. I've barely looked at the output myself, but I will update if I find a solution.

Ok, so I found out my compiler is broken as well as well as a few essential components on this distro, and I do not have the time to troubleshoot all these issues. I'd rather build my system from the ground up.

After doing a little work I suspect that Mint is calling the wrong libraries by architecture not supported by my system. All of my drivers are correct but X is calling a bunch of weird and unecessary components. If you want to go further, look at X and not your drivers.
