HP LaserJet P1005

Postby kayman on Mon Aug 20, 2012 2:13 am

I am trying to get my HP LaserJet P1005 printer working in Linux Mint Debian edition 201204.
It basically installed by itself and is 'Connected to localhost' but won't print - bummer!

So I did a sudo hp-check which revealed under "SUMMARY"
error: 15 errors and/or warnings.
Please refer to the installation instructions at:
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/index.html

Well, the download page of HPLIP asks for Linux distribution and version. Unless I am missing something, I cannot find anything related to Linux Mint Debian edition 201204; It's either Linux Mint version 8 to 13 or Debian version 5.0 to 6.0.5.
I request assistance pointing me to the correct distro/version please.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Well I can't get mine going under Maya either. Using hplip gets me as far as trying to download the plugin, which fails every time with no meaningful error message. The number of times this particular printer appears in this forum does not give me great hope of getting a resolution, or at least one I will understand as I am not au fait with the command line tools to any great degree.

This does seem a weakness of this version of linux, perhaps its more widespread as I have no hands-on knowledge of the others. I have to mail files to my wife to print on her computer that uses Vista if I want to get something printed. Not good, not good at all. All the rest seems very good indeed and I have been happy for months, but basic printing ... why the inexplicable weak spot ?

I forgot where i found this but roughly this solved it for me:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install hplip
sudo hp-setup -i

thanks to whomever i got that from!
