I guess pptp:

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude install pptp-linux network-manager-pptp
It should be a VPN option under the networkmanager menu..

NetworManger applet is located to the right side of the panel..
On this picture it is located top right, left of the Tue, right of the battery indicator..
EDIT:
That guide refers to the default applet, you just have to install support for VPN. My first post stated how you get support for pptp in network manager. You might need to start it, though it should start automagically...

Seems like the repo is unavailable, make sure your network connection is working, you could try an offline installation with http://packages.ubuntu.com

Download the packages from the URL I gave you, if you can, then install them offline...

Select the connection you have configured, it should connect. Unfortunately you do not get a confirmation of failure or success, but the icon should change (Sorry, I have just used with VPN with wireless, not sure how the wired network icon would change).
