[SOLVED] USB 3.0 Ports Inactive

Post by N1X3L »

Hi all,

I'm enjoying the latest Mint (System: Kernel 3.2.0-30-generic x86_64 (64 bit) Distro Linux Mint 13 Maya – Cinnamon), but there have been a couple problems I'm slowly working through. One problem I can't seem to make anymore headway on, is that my USB 3.0 ports are non–functional. I know my kernel should support USB 3.0. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I'm CLI shy, but I managed to generate these...

From your output there doesn't appear to be a problem, the ports are recognized and have a driver. If devices don't work, are they usb 3 compatible?

That's odd. :? I am absolutely certain the devices are USB 3.0 compatible, and they function on this same computer when I'm booted into Windows 7 as such. Can you think of something else that could be going on? Also, thank you for the help you've already given, and anymore you are able to provide — know that it's appreciated. :)

If you plug in a device then immediately enter dmesg | tail in a terminal, is there mention of a detected device, errors? Try this with different ports/devices.

Thank you for recommending that I "try this with different ports/devices"; it forced me to overcome my natural lazy tendency of just plugging peripherals in the front. So it turns out USB 3.0 works — but only in back? :? Why would that be?

After boot, no storage devices tried yet
dmesg | tail

I would think the same thing, except all those front "inactive" ports function normally in Windows — so I know they are plugged in. :|

You've already been a tremendous help, and I appreciate that. You've also given me enough sure-footing to keep exploring this myself. I'll relabel this post as solved, but will continue posting here if I discover what is going on with the inactivity of those front ports. Thanks again! :D

I just loaded Mint yesterday and I have the same issue. I have an HP 8740w laptop though and it only has two USB 3.0 ports right next to each other. Neither works

I'm having the same problem. The ports worked with Mint 14 but after I up dated to Mint 17 they don't work anymore. Any ideas?
