Mint Install and Gparted do not see Windows install

Postby yeejr on Tue Sep 18, 2012 3:56 pm

I did a clean install of Windows 7 (64 Bit), which boots just fine. RAID is not set. I've booted to LinuxMint 13 live disk (cinnamon) and a gparted livedisk (and to a ubuntu 12.04 lts livedisk), none of which sees the Windows partition - no dual boot option exists.

Boot-repair does not help: paste.debian.net/190636/

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

hi yeejr, you say
Boot-repair does not help: paste.debian.net/190636/
but the Bootrepair report says
Boot successfully repaired. You can now reboot your computer.
The report also says
WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.
so I guess that's why GParted doesn't show the Windows OS. But that doesn't explain why the repair hasn't worked. Have you found anything further since your post? regards

Thanks for the reply.

When I ran boot-repair, it seemed to give me the all-clear, but I still could not see the Windows partition when I went to install Mint. I am not sure what the GPT warning means.

I was using GParted to look at the disk, but that did not see the partition either. I even tried to fix it with Gpart, and that did not work.

I ended up finding an older Windows image and restored that first (I was trying to do a clean install). This image was created from the same OEM Windows install disk earlier this year. Then, for some reason Linux Mint did see the Windows install and I was able to install Mint. Unfortunately, the machine did not boot into Grub, just straight into Windows.

Looks like that is a common problem, and seems to be many topics on the forums for it, but I have not had a chance to go through them.

Kinda would like to know why this is happening..

I don't know anything about GUID, so can't help there. Also I realise I was wrong about the GUID being respondible for GParted failing to see that partition. The report says fdisk doesn't support that type of table but that GNU Parted does. Anyway, you've installed Windows and then Mint, but the PC just boots straight to Windows. My guess is that during installation you put Mint's bootloader on the partition mbr, eg sda2, instead of the drive mbr eg sda. You can put Mint's bootloader to the drive mbr from a live CD or USB
Code: Select all
sudo mount /dev/sdXY /mnt
replace X and Y with the appropriate drive and partition for Mint
Code: Select all
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdX
note - there's a gap between =/mnt and /dev, and no partition number after sdX. You should now be able to re-boot into Mint then
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub
so that Grub can pick up the Windows OS. hope this helps, regards
