Toshiba Satellite s855-50: no ethernet, no wireless

Post by Prometheus722 »

I bought a Toshiba Satellite s855-50 for school and I cannot get an internet connection through mint. Neither wifi or ethernet works. I have win7 pre-installed and it (obviously) works fine. I know very little about linux so I don't know where to start. I tried using a usb wifi adapter but it was not recognized. here is the output from mintwifi:

-------------------------
* I. scanning WIFI PCI devices...
-- Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8723
==> PCI ID = 10ec:8723
-------------------------
* II. querying ndiswrapper...
-------------------------
* III. querying iwconfig...
lo no wireless extensions.

-------------------------
* IV. querying ifconfig...
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:28 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:28 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:1920 (1.9 KB) TX bytes:1920 (1.9 KB)

-------------------------
* V. querying DHCP...
[sudo] password for *****:
-------------------------
* VI. querying nslookup google.com...
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Does anyone know what to do?

That command outputs :

No drivers showing there, so not good.

What version of Mint

It's extremely unusual for wired connection not to work. It never happened to me.

I know, i've installed several different distros before and ethernet always worked. I installed the latest version, 13.

I should also mention, i installed it from a flash drive. i put the image on the drive using unetbootin. It didn't have an option for 13, only version 10. It seemed to work so i went forward with it. Is there some way that unetbootin didn't copy some newer drivers from the image to the drive?

Also, the laptop is a new model, Realtek doesn't even have official wireless drivers yet. Let me know if you can think of some solution. thanks for the help so far.

But are you saying you have installed a version of Mint on this machine before?

There is a media check option on the boot menu - when you boot the cd/usb to check if it is good
