Firefox will not start (SOLVED)

Post by Fornhamfred »

I decided to try to update Firefox to 15 by firstly adding the repositories as instructed on the mozilla site but get the following message when reloading synaptic.
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/fi ... ce/Sources 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/fi ... 6/Packages 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I then tried extracting the tar file but this failed when I tried to move the file to /opt

Firefox 14 still showed as installed in synaptic so I removed it and re-installed it but now I cannot launch it from the mint menu or a terminal.

Any help please.

I'm pretty sure that Mozilla website doesn't instruct you to add Ubuntu repos to Debian. Not to mention that the repo you've added is described as "Official PPA for Firefox Beta" - you just won't get the current stable version from there.

What exactly failed?
Anyway, overwriting something installed normally (via dpkg/apt-get/aptitude/synaptic/etc.) with something from a tar file may lead to breakages.

Remove it again. Check if /opt/firefox is still there after it. If it is, remove it manually. Reinstall Firefox 14. Wait for Clem to add a newer version to LMDE repo. :)

Thanks for your replies.

I have now succeeded in installing 15.01. The thread I used was as follows:

http://www.libre-software.net/how-to-in ... nd_firefox

I know realise that this is not an official mozilla site. After extracting the file there are two lines missing from the instructions.

sudo mv /usr/bin/firefox /usr/bin/firefox-old

sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox.
