why is Linux Mint XFCE BETA 008 so slow?

Post by shengchieh »

I failed to install Linux Mint KDE 4.0 Daryna (an ext3 format error), so I decided to take Linux Mint XFCE BETA 008 4.0 Daryna for a spin.
I noticed the system is slow, slower then PCLinuxOS 2007 which uses KDE. Isn't XFCE supposed to be significantly faster than KDE
(even with different distros)?

Based on earlier posts about slow XFCE, I checked in Settings -> Window Manager Tweaks -> Compositor. I do NOT have display
compositing enabled.

The graphics card is 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02). If you want to
see the entire lspci output, see http://shengchieh.50webs.com/lspcioutput.txt .

What else can I look for beside the compositor to speed this slowpoke system?

What is your PC specs? Processor, RAM, CPU? XFCE is not really that much faster than Gnome when it is decked out. It uses a lot of Gnome stuff still to make it complete.

Thank for replying, but I couldn't wait and decided to install dreamlinux 3.0 RC1 which also uses XFCE. It's about 4-20 times
faster (depending on what you are doing). But I'll try Linux Mint later on my ASUS eee mini-laptop.
