UP5 held broken pkg?

Post by feffer »

Read the blog and installed UP5 to my otherwise up-to-date LMDE. The install failed part way through. So I rebooted and tried again. This seemed to get the rest of the pkgs. However, the restart brought me to the login screen background, but no dialog boxes. I dropped into cli and ran apt-get install -f and this showed OK, but one pkg held -- "python-pyatspi2"

Then tried to install mint-meta-debian-cinnamon since my desktop is cinnamon (no mate). This failed with the message:
Depends xchat, but it is not going to be install. You have held broken packages
Not sure how to resolve this?

NOTE: originally posted to update/upgrade, then saw that this was probably the correct forum. Will try to delete the first post, but notice that someone has replied saying he had the same issue. Sorry.

I have essentially the same issue with xchat preventing the installation of mint-meta-debian-cinnamon. Would love to sort this out...

I deleted the failed system and restored an intact, pre-update one from a week ago. So now I want to try to upgrade again, but see xchat is still a problem. These commands were run on the pre-upgrade system. Evidently xchat was installed but removed. I don't think I did that. Maybe it was removed during a previous dist-upgrade and I didn't notice it.

Code: Select all

mintxps# dpkg -l xchat

|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

feffer,
let's see if i understand a bit what i'm seeing in that output :) it looks like that install was once tracking testing and at some point you converted it again to the UP rhythm, is this right?

Yes. I did get xchat installed by temporarily adding the Testing apt source.

Running

Code: Select all

#dpkg --configure -a #finished w/o error
#apt-get install -f #also is OK now
#apt-get install mint-meta-debian-cinnamon #also now works
However, on restart I get to the login screen with no login dialog.
Dropped to terminal and tried sudo startx. This gets me to a gui desktop but w/o the mint menu. So I borked something. Any hope?

Leaving for a trip tomorrow. I'm going to have to leave this for now.

I have a good backup - pre-UP5 - but I've tried this twice and ended with the no-dialog login screen. That and when I go to cli and startx I get a desktop with no mint menu. Must have mixed up my sources. I think I'll have to wait for a LMDE iso that has UP5 in it.

apart from xchat and xchat-common we need to know what others pkgs are there that came from testing and can now cause some kind of incompatibility. also what graphics card you have and are you using the proprietary or opensource driver for it?

finally, in those 2 commands

Code: Select all

#dpkg --configure -a #finished w/o error
#apt-get install -f #also is OK now
you saw pkgs being removed (specially in the second one?)

thx zerozero. I'm leaving in a few hours. I don't think I'm going to try to repair this. I'll be back in 2 weeks. At that point, I'll have to decide how to deal with it. This is not resolved, but I think I'll post some basic questions about LMDE in a new topic. thx again.
