No sound from Firefox

Post by yehudah »

I searched and searched... and I know that if I don't find it on Google, my question must be retarded... but, there isn't one thread I found that pertains only to my problem, on my platform... here goes:

There is no sound in Firefox, period. Everything else works.

I'm running Rhythmbox for MP3s, the default DVD player for DVDs, and they both work fine.

My system:
Intel 945 board
Intel P4 Dual Core 2.8Ghz
Corsair PPC4200 1GB
WD SATA2 250GB
ATI X800GTO2
No sound card, USB Headset

It isn't a deal breaker not to get this working... but it is the ONLY thing that doesn't work!!!

The caveat is that I'm not a Linux guru, but just a regular guy who tinkers. I've had Mint for almost a week and love it. I just need a little assistance.

Hi
There is no sound in Firefox, period
Do
you mean that embedded Mplayer does not work in Fifefox?

If so

If not, what exactly do you mean?

mplayer in firefox?

That must be what I'm talking about. There is no sound from youtube or any other video site, in firefox at this point. I'll have a look at the link you provided.

Thanks

Nick,
I did the instructions from your post.. I still get no sound from firefox.

If it helps, I have disabled my onboard sound card and use a USB headset. The headset works fine in Rhythmbox and Amorok. ....just not in firefox.

Any ideas?

Alrighty... I'm stumped.

I followed some links that help me install/reinstall mplayer plugin for firefox. I did the command line shuffle and it didn't bomb, so I figured it must have worked. During the reinstall, it even said that mplayer plugin was already installed.

Oy yoy yoy....

So here are the only two issues I have with my minty fresh distro:

1) No sound from videos in firefox
2) My 3D screensavers, and OpenArena video flickers.

This is seemingly easy stuff guys... someone has to know how to fix this!!

Update... so the flicker I get in screen savers and in Open Arena is minimal. It's more like a flicker every 3 - 5 seconds. It's almost like a refresh... very odd.

I still don't get sound in Firefox.. and pursuant to a different thread, my DVD movies now work (libdvdcss).

I can live with the flicker.. .the sound in firefox is bugging me though.

Also.. maybe I wasn't clear about this: My onboard sound is disabled, I only use my USB headset (which works great btw).

I am also using USB audio. I do not get sound from Flash in firefox as well. That's what's not working, it's the Flash plugin sound. I see the system uses ESD for software sound mixing, and Flash has limited setup preferences (nothing for sound, just microphone). I've run into this problem before, I'll try to install Flash plugin directly from Firefox, not a .deb package and let you know.

Sorry to say the "firefox install" of flashplayer didn't make the sound work either. I had to resort to using my Microsoft machine to watch content using flash.. boo
