Post by jaws222 »

I have a dv6700 laptop with Linux MInt 13 installed. I installed Skype but it cannot seem to find the interal webcam. I've also checked system info and do not recognize the device. Any suggestions?

That webcam should show in the lsusb command and it doesn't.

Do you have all the updates installed (level 1 to 5)? Consider to upgrade the 3.2 kernel to 3.3 or 3.4 (http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=40185&f=42).

Is the webcam disabled in bios or somewhere else?

Is the webcam working in Windows, in the Mint liveCD or in other liveCD's?

No, it does not show in lsusb

Level 4 is unsafe & 5 is Dangerous according to the update manager. Or is this an exaggeration? Would the update be easily recognized (have the word webcam in it?)
The current kernel is 3.2.

Is the webcam disabled in bios or somewhere else?

The BIOS is very simple and other than virtualization and a couple other items contains not much else.

Is the webcam working in Windows, in the Mint liveCD or in other liveCD's?

The original OS on this laptop was Windows Vista so you can take a guess why I got rid of it. :) I had Ubuntu 10.10 prior to MInt 13. To be honest, I never was interested in the webcam until recently. I just got a job where I'll be travelling quite a bit so I thought skype would be nice to install.

Hi,
please try

Code: Select all

ls /dev/video*
it should show something like /dev/video0 if not it could be that your webcam is disabled. Please look for a switch or a keycompination to reactivate.
If it shows something please install cheese.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install cheese
Start the program. Do you see a video?

The level 4 and 5 are used by default in Ubuntu. They could cause problems but a problem you already have and the latest 3.2 kernel could fix that and provide other security updates. The older kernel is still there just in case.

Yes, I already tried that with no joy. It seems the issue is with the crappy HP internal webcams. Once you upgrade from say XP to Vista (or downgrade like most people did) or go from Vista to 7 the webcam becomes inoperable. Even the HP forum seems to have given up. A lot of the suggestions they offer do not work. SO, I would imagine going from Vist to LInux MInt is another issue. I may just buy an external webcam cheap on ebay for my laptop. Any suggestions as to a linux-friendly cam?
