lightscribe dvd drivers?

Post by whiteEagle »

I have a similar problem with my laptop.

Laptop: HP Pavilion dv9827cl Entertainment
Multimedia Drive: LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support

The interesting thing is that I had a similar problem with the factory-installed, Wihdows Vista Home Premium x64

It worked perfectly until I installed ALL the important updates in Windows Update, and it worked perfectly with Linux Mint 13 until I installed ALL the recommended updates from Update Manager. It would "appear" to have come AFTER those updates were applied (I can't believe that)

Checking the HP Troubleshooting website, all it recommends is cleaning the laser(s) or buying a new device.

This particular device does not support S.M.A.R.T. technology. I've checked it with 'smartctl' and 'GSmartControl'

Here's the output:

smartctl 5.41 2011-06-09 r3365 [x86_64-linux-3.2.0-23-generic] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-11 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net

User Capacity: 662,306,816 bytes [662 MB]
Logical block size: 2048 bytes
>> Terminate command early due to bad response to IEC mode page

Error Counter logging not supported
Device does not support Self Test logging
Device does not support Background scan results logging
scsiPrintSasPhy Log Sense Failed [unsupported field in scsi command]

However, the output from 'Disk Utility' shows a bit more problems.

Is there a specific driver for these devices? Or, is there a generic driver that will work with a bit of tweaking?

CD/DVD drives are not S.M.A.R.T. devices, this term applies to hard drives only and refers to an analytical and reporting function to advise on potential hard drive malfunctions.

Your CD/DVD drivers are built into the kernel and no further action is required by you.

LightScribe is a software program that you have to install yourself. There are two programs available: LightScribe Simple Labeler (http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsect ... index.aspx) and LaCie LightScribe Labeler (http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10204).

Concur with the LaCie LightScribe Labeler suggestion. Works very well for me.
