Display errors, flickering, using MATE, Radeon and Compiz

Post by avoura »

I am using Mint 13 with MATE DE, and a Radeon HD 7750 graphics card. I recently installed the drivers for it and that works (fglrx).
I then decided to install Docky, but that does not work completely unless I install Compiz, so I installed Compiz. I have used Compiz in Ubuntu before, and both Compiz and Docky in PinguyOS. So my main reasons for using Compiz are: Docky needs it, and it allows me to zoom the whole screen to read things are otherwise too small.
But, from time to time, I get a flickering image on the screen. Something like a random blocky image will appear on the whole screen for a fraction of second and then disappear. Or a segment of the screen will enlarge to the whole screen for a fraction of a second and then it goes back to normal. It has only happened when running Compiz. If I switch from Compiz back to Marcos (using Fusion Icon) then the flickering effect goes away and all is well, except for Docky not intellihiding and no way to zoom the screen.

Is there a way to get Compiz working in a way that is stable and reliable and without random images flashing briefly on the screen at random intervals?

I eventually found this

which shows how to enable compositing in marco, which then gives a much more stable desktop and Docky working properly, although I miss my wobbly windows from Compiz.

Update: I still get some parts of the display flickering and disappearing and then reappearing.

Anyone know what is causing this? I assume it is related to the graphics card drivers.

Is there a way to use my AMD Radeon HD 7750 graphics card with Linux Mint and have it work properly with proper drivers at max resolution? The open source ones could not give much of a high resolution.

Also, a couple of times recently, my PC has just frozen when running Linux Mint. Maybe related to the drivers? The only thing I can do is to use ALT + SysRq + {R E I S U B} which then reboots the system.
