Really don't get Kwallet & secret services

Post by Lnx_User1 »

Love KDE to death but I don't really understand why the Kwallet and whatever this new secret services thing is. From what I understand Kwallet stores passwords, I assume since the only passwords I use is to login to the desktop, and wifi and for internet websites (???) it deals with that but why have me enter a login password to the desktop and then require a second password for Kwallet so I can do anything? Seems redundant. Futhermore I don't know what this so-called secret services thing is and why I kept getting asked for a secret services password to use my wifi connection. This is confusing. I mean, I appreciate security but my computer doesn't contain missle launch codes. Can anyone explain why I need this feature Kwallet or secret services?

You can turn Kwallet off. That's what I did. Don't know what that secret service thing you're talking about is.

  • KDE Wallet password integration
This is by no means an essential add-on, but it is definitely useful if you want your passwords all stored in one secure location. Rather than having Firefox store your information, why not have KWallet do what it was designed to do? Konqueror and all other KDE applications can use KWallet by default. This extension adds that capability to Firefox

Rendundant yes, but probably integration (making kwallet password storage item available to other applications, such as the windows manager kdm ?

  • KSecretService optionally enables a shared password storage, therefore making your saved passwords available to many other applicatios, leading to a more secure system and better integration of non-KDE apps into the Plasma Workspaces and KDE apps into non-Plasma workspaces.

In KWalletManager there is an option 'Enable KDE wallet subsystem'. Just uncheck it and apply.

Kwalletmanager has not been an issue for me but on my Asus eee 1000HA is was and searching for answers provided no real solutions. Turning kwalletmanager off was the only way to get a wireless connection. In the konsole or terminal enter kwalletmanager, go to settings - configure kwallet - wallet preferences - uncheck enable kwallet subsystem - click apply and OK. Hopefully this problem will get fixed in the future.
