SSD Crucial v4 very slow on installing or updating

Postby Koos82 on Sun Oct 21, 2012 5:32 pm

Hello Linux Mint Users,

I have a question about my Crucial v4 256gb Sata-300 SSD in my Sony Vaio VGN-NS38E Laptop, i recently build this SSD into my laptop, witn normal use of my laptop and on boot time i see it is much much faster, only when iam installing software of when iam updating Linux Mint, the drive starts working (HDD Led is on), and keeps doing that for a very long time, like it hangs on some point, in the end the job is done, but it takes a very long time and it looks that it was with my Sata mechanical drive much faster on that point.

I Followed the SSD optimize instructions, but unfortunately its still the same.

Did anyone haves the same problem, or maybe a solution?
Many Thanx in Advance.

Also incredibly slow here - startup and applcation launch and such is fast, but writing to disk is slooowwwwwwwwww compared to a normal old harddrive. Took me an hour to install ubuntu 12.10 on a crucial v4 ssd, takes 15 minutes tops on my old harddrive.

It's probably just poor quality. I've certainly learned my lesson and will stay clear of suspiciously cheap SSDs from now on - not worth it.

Update: returned the Crucial V4 and bought an Intel SSD 330 instead - well worth it! Everything is fast. I didn't know the hard drive had so much say in how fast your laptop is, thought it was more down to CPU and RAM. The somewhat bloated Ubuntu 12.10 boots in 12 seconds - and it took all of 8 minutes to install it! That's with a dated 1.3GHz dual core processor. Installing packages is ridiculously fast compared to on a old hard disk. If you got money to burn, spend it on an SSD (not Crucial V4 though).

So you guys think I should get intel instead of my crucial ?

although it is doing 150 MB/s copy/write from the same disk,200 MB/s from one ssd to another on windows. It is only 50 MB/s on Mint.
