Please, a question re Linux Mint Lxde...

Post by UUUnicorn »

Hello. Please, I have a question regarding Linux Mint Lxde...

I am running and using Linux Mint 12 Lxde. I believe that the support end date is April 2013 (if I'm not mistaken).

Since there's no Linux Mint 13 Lxde, I was wondering about downloading and installing Linux Mint 13 MATE, then customising it. Do I install:

a) Lxde,

b) Lxde desktop environment/window manager, and/or

c) Lxde meta package?

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

UUUnicorn

Installing the meta package lxde (sudo apt-get install lxde) should get you LXDE, and it pulls it default LXDE applications as well. Perhaps it would be better to use the Linux Mint 13 Xfce edition as a base, though it should also work fine on top of MATE.

Thanks for responding.

I figured that, by installing it on top of MATE, the result would be about the same size/weight as Linux Mint 12 Lxde. 12 feels and runs just right on my MSI Wind netbook.

Thanks again.

Mint 13 LXDE doesn't exist but you can install Mint 12 LXDE and upgrade to Mint 13 by changing your sources.list. Change the lisa repo to maya, the oneiric to precise, comment out the lisa-lxde and update/upgrade your system. It takes a while on low RAM/CPU computers so it's best to do it from one of the consoles (don't login to X) to save RAM.

This is a good way to avoid the Mint 13 hardware requirements because Mint 12 (LXDE, Gnome-CD-no-codecs) only needs 256MB of RAM and one CD while Mint 13 needs 384MB of RAM and one DVD.

This type of upgrade is usually not recommended but you already had Mint 12 LXDE installed...

Would I do this in "Software Sources"?

If so, then would it be in the "Other Software" tab?

Thanks again.

No, from the command line.

I did this on some of my systems without problems and works in fresh Mint 12 LXDE installs but could give problems with your install so it's a good idea to backup the system with Clonezilla before the upgrade.

Here's how:
- Reboot the computer, don't login to X, login to the console.
- Remove the mint-search-addon with "sudo apt-get purge mint-search-addon" because it fails to upgrade properly (mint-meta-core is also removed).
- Point the /etc/apt/sources.list file to the Mint 13 repos, replace "lisa" with "maya" and "oneiric" with "precise". To do that use nano (or other editor), run "sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list".
- The LXDE specific repo can be left as is or just comment it out with "#" to avoid error messages when the repo closes.
- Update the system with "sudo apt-get update" and upgrade the system with "sudo apt-get upgrade". You will need about 1GB of free disk space for this for the base system, more if you have more installed programs.
- After this step run "sudo apt-get clean" to reclaim some disk space.
- Run "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" for the final upgrade, reinstall mint-meta-core with "sudo apt-get install mint-meta-core. Reboot.
- Use "sudo apt-get clean" to reclaim some more disk space. You may change the wallpaper to the maya wallpaper that is already installed in the maya wallpaper directory.

Your system is now upgraded but is not Mint 13 LXDE and could be improved but should work ok.

Unofficial Linux Mint 15 LXDE released!
The official version was released so it's time for the premiere unofficial version. The system has been pampered, repaired were all reported errors. In addition, some features have been introduced.
